Tracy Morgan will star as a disgraced former football player on a mission to rehabilitate his image in a new NBC comedy pilot.
The series hails from Tina Fey and other “30 Rock” alums, including Fey’s co-showrunner Robert Carlock and writer Sam Means, as well as producers Eric Gurian and David Miner. Carlock and Means are the writers of the new pilot starring Morgan, which is also directed and executive produced by Rhys Thomas. No other casting has been announced.
The single-camera pilot comes from Universal Television and production companies Little Stranger, Bevel Gears and 3 Arts. The show would air on NBC should it get picked up to series.
Last year, it was announced that Morgan would star in a Paramount+ spinoff of CBS’ “The Neighborhood” titled “Crutch,” in which Morgan will play the cousin to Cedric the Entertainer’s character, Calvin Butler. Morgan’s deal allows him to star in both projects in the future.
Morgan starred opposite Fey on NBC’s “30 Rock” from 2006 to 2013, across seven seasons. He received an Emmy nomination for his performance as Tracy Jordan, the eccentric and unpredictable star of the fictional NBC sketch comedy series “TGS.”
Before “30 Rock,” Morgan was on “Saturday Night Live” for seven seasons, leaving his mark with characters such as Astronaut Jones and Brian Fellows. After “SNL,” he starred in his own comedy series, “The Tracy Morgan Show.”
In 2023, he released the Max stand-up special “Tracy Morgan: Takin’ It Too Far.” His other television credits include “Martin,” “The Last OG,” “Crank Yankers,” “Green Eggs and Ham” and stand-up specials “Staying Alive,” “Tracy Morgan: Bona Fide” and “Black & Blue.”
