Just over one year ago, THP was at the forefront of telling the story of how Sean Toulon and Odyssey Golf had amicably gone their separate ways. While there was initially some understandable shock within our readership for what felt like such a sudden change, when we were able to sit down with Sean and discuss where things were going to go from there (full article here) it became clear that it was a new beginning for what has since become Toulon Golf.
As we prepared to tell the story of their plans and goals moving forward, there was no clear picture of just how it might unfold. However, so many months later with twelve Small Batch releases and a full “First Run” lineup of putters under their belts, we thought it would be a good time to catch up with the Toulon Family to both reflect and look forward.
Toulon Golf – One Year Later
Just this past week, Toulon Golf released their fourteenth Small Batch creation, the Palo Alto (which you can read about here, and every time you think there is nowhere left for them to go, they keep surprising. According to the company, Small Batch has exceeded their expectations in every way, as when it began, they weren’t exactly sure what type of reception such a release would receive, after all, we are talking premium putters in design, construction, and of course, price.
While the price will continue to be a talking point for some out there, the Small Batch releases have become something which many of us putter connoisseur’s (read: nerds) anticipate each and every month. Much of the reception has been built in the fact that it is crystal clear the amount of thought that goes into not just the creation and execution of each release, but also the storytelling which accompanies them. To be honest, that ability to weave a story absolutely differentiates them from every other premium putter maker out there. With eight to nine months of work put into each release to ensure that every intricacy is up to the standards they demand for Small Batch, it makes sense that with each new drop you can feel the passion shining through.
However, Toulon Golf understands that not everyone can acquire one of the ultra-limited, high-end, Small Batch designs. So, this past February they answered the question that we here at THP were asked constantly once the re-launch was announced, would there be a standing lineup of putters? That answer came with the “First Run” batch of putters made up of eight different shapes with multiple necks and dexterities, done as only Toulon Golf can do.
That “24 Collection” has been a massive hit for the brand with the form and finish being at the top of the game for an “in-line” series of milled putters. However, many of you will be happy to know that it was simply a starting point for Toulon Golf as they head into what they are referring to as their third chapter. Moving forward, the verbiage will evolve into referring to this line as the “Toulon Collection” and there are ample plans for new things coming in 2025 both in the base options available as well as unique runs like we saw with the Alcatraz Blackout Limited Edition release earlier this year.
Toulon Golf – The Third Stage
As you can see, there is no sign of slowing down when it comes to the Toulon brand. The amount of support and positive feedback which this re-launch has received is fuel to the fire for a family that truly does care about the people who make it all possible. In fact, over the year-plus, the family aspect has risen to the top. Most people recognize the Sean Toulon name, as they should with him being a certifiable legend within the golf industry, but Toulon Golf goes so much deeper than that.
This relaunch began with Sean and Tony Toulon working hand in hand to be the creative engine behind it all, but the evolution of the team with the addition of Preston Toulon coming over from Mitsubishi earlier this year has brought more structure to the equation. Recently, Jon Alongi, which many THP’ers will know from his time at Mitsubishi has come into the fold as well, with he and Preston serving as the center of facilitation and organization for the masterful creativeness that both Sean and Tony possess. Not to mention, even the matriarch of the family, Mrs. Toulon, works in house. It truly is a family affair, and how could you not love seeing that?
Of course, as you are reading this, the big question in your head is surely about their future and where things go from here. Well, it won’t surprise you to know that the answer is broad and ambitious. Alongside the 2025 Toulon Collection will of course be the Small Batch releases that showcase the Toulon creativity so well. Perhaps more excitingly is that the team believes we can expect a much steadier stream of new and fresh designs throughout the year, including non-putter products. As for the constant question of if the Toulon Garage will ever return, the answer is yes, but there is no timeline as they know when it comes back, it has to be perfect.
It has been an exciting re-birth for Toulon Golf, and it is clear that as they move from their second stage into the third, this is only the beginning. For more information on any of the products the company has available, check out their website at www.toulongolf.com.
