If you were one of the many fantasy football general managers who selected Stefon Diggs early in your draft, it’s time to scramble to find his replacement on the waiver wire.
The Houston Texans star receiver is out for the season after sustaining a non-contact ACL injury that landed him on injured reserve.
Looking ahead, there are a number of wide receivers to consider as replacements who aren’t being utilized heavily in most fantasy football leagues. Here, we take a look at five of the top waiver-wire replacements for Diggs.
Both in the short term and long term, Jalen Tolbert could be a smart addition to your fantasy football roster. The Dallas Cowboys are facing the Atlanta Falcons in Week 9, and their secondary gives up the seventh-most fantasy points to opposing wide receivers in the NFL.
That’s the short-term benefit. The long-term benefit lies in the simple fact that Dallas cannot run the ball, and the entire offense revolves around Dak Prescott spreading the ball around as much as he can. Tolbert, in seven games this season, has garnered 27 catches for 334 yards and two touchdowns on 37 targets. That’s one more target than he received in 17 games last year.
The Los Angeles Chargers have been without Quentin Johnston the past couple of weeks, as an ankle injury kept him out of action. There is some hope he will return to action in Week 9, however, and as a long-term play to replace Diggs in your lineup this Johnston could be a solid choice.
Though not a high-volume receiver, Johnston has shown up big a couple of times for the Chargers in 2024, catching 14 passes for 164 yards and three touchdowns. The Chargers have begun throwing the ball at a higher volume in recent weeks, with Justin Herbert attempting 34, 39, and 32 passes the past three games. Assuming Johnston can return healthy in Week 9, he could be a boon for your fantasy team, and for the Chargers, against the Cleveland Browns.
It’s proverbial next-man-up time for the Houston Texans right now in the wake of Diggs’ season-ending knee injury. In addition to Diggs being lost for the 2024 season, star receiver Nico Collins will not return until at least Week 10 after being placed in IR a few weeks back due to a hamstring injury.
Metchie hasn’t played a ton for Houston, but last week when Diggs went down with his knee injury the third-year receiver out of Alabama stepped up with three catches for 29 yards on four targets to close out the game. Last season, he caught 16 passes for 158 yards. Given Houston’s need for receivers to step up, there is plenty of room for Metchie to pump up those numbers in the future.
The Carolina Panthers traded Diontae Johnson to the Baltimore Ravens on Tuesday, opening up the door for Xavier Legette to significantly expand his role in the offense.
The first-round rookie receiver out of South Carolina has already shown promise this season, catching 22 passes for 221 yards and three touchdowns on 35 targets. Now with Johnson out of the picture, and veteran Adam Thielen still ailing with a hamstring injury, it’s Legette’s time to shine.
One of the biggest risers in the fantasy football world, Cedric Tillman has emerged as a go-to receiver for the Cleveland Browns in the wake of the Amari Cooper trade.
In the past two games, Tillman has pulled down 15 catches for 180 yards and two touchdowns on 21 targets going against the Cincinnati Bengals and Baltimore Ravens. Now, with Jameis Winston under center and operating an offense that looks halfway decent, this young receiver has a chance to take off.
Get him while you still can.
