One of the WTA’s top 10 players has suffered from injury just days before the Indian Wells Masters commences.
This is the final week players can use to build some form and momentum ahead of competing at the Masters 1000 event that is referred to by many as the ‘fifth Grand Slam’.
Tournaments are currently ongoing in Dubai, in addition to the Merida and Acapulco Open events in Mexico, and Texas’ ATX Open.
But one player who would be a contender for the Indian Wells title, has fitness concerns which could leave her participation in the tournament in doubt.
Before entering the Merida Open, Paula Badosa had won just four matches since reaching the Australian Open semi-finals.
She began her campaign in Mexico and defeated Jaqueline Cristian before facing Daria Saville in the quarter-finals.
The Spaniard claimed the first set in dormant fashion, but after trailing 3-5 in the second set, she could no longer continue.
A disappointed Badosa then shook hands with Saville at the net as the Australian advanced to her first semi-final of the season.
It remains to be seen if this puts the 26-year-old’s participation at the Indian Wells Masters in doubt.
Should Badosa be declared fit to play at Indian Wells, she will aim to win the title for the second time.
In 2021, Badosa claimed the biggest title of her career to date when she lifted the championship at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden.
At just 23 years of age, the World number 10 defeated Victoria Azarenka in a three-hour epic, which is the longest women’s final in tournament history.
In the process Badosa became the first Spanish woman to win the Indian Wells title, and she prevented Azarenka from becoming the first woman to win the tournament three times.
