According to the New York State Department of Consumer Protection, the holidays are the busiest time of year for shoppers.
Shoppers are most vulnerable to online scams during the holiday season.
“If it’s too good to be true, it probably is,” said Katie Sherwin, director of the NYS Department of Consumer Protection.
Experts say many consumers are moving their shopping habits from in person to online.
The National Retail Federation projects one-third of holiday shopping in 2024 will happen online.
According to DCA data, online buyers spent more than $273.3 billion in the 2023 holiday season alone. But consumers reported $95.2 million in losses due to online scams.
Experts warn scammers use the holidays to take advantage of shoppers by stealing their private information.
Katie Sherwin recommends doing your research on sellers and storefronts. Check for legitimate websites, as well as real product information and valid reviews.
She also says to shop online using a credit card instead of a debit card or cash transfer platform.
She notes most credit card companies have fraud protection policies in place to help consumers.
“Don’t fall for the rush of a great deal,” said Sherwin, “that’s how scammers take advantage.”
If you think you’ve fallen victim to an online shopping scam, the state asks that you immediately call the Consumer Assistance Helpline at 1-800-697-1220. Or is available Monday to Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Consumer complaints can be filed at any time at www.dos.ny.gov/consumerprotection.
