NCAA Football (0.75 Unit) Virginia Tech @ Miami -10 (-110; Odds via Caesars): 6:30 PM CT on ESPN
Virginia Tech has been prone to slow starts this season, and one of those tonight is a good way to get buried in this game. A very good Miami team will not show any mercy in this ACC opener for both teams, as the Canes have legitimate CFP aspirations. So I think they get rolling early against the Hokies, who just can’t get out of the gates in good form this season.
Tech has sort of a plodding offense, the product of a former offensive lineman calling plays, and it has caused them to rank 100th in first half scoring at 8.5 PPG. That is not going to be enough to keep up with this Miami offense that is extremely efficient behind Cam Ward, averaging 25.7 first half points which is 9th nationally. The Canes have averaged a 17.8 point lead at halftime so far this season, and I think they flex their muscles against this first conference opponent.
MLB (0.5 Unit) Baltimore Orioles/Minnesota Twins Over 8.5 (-110; Odds via Caesars): 7:10 PM CT on Bally Sports North
Last night’s collapse essentially made it impossible for the Twins to make the playoffs, but I think we see one more game of typical Twins baseball here. They get to face a bad lefty starter at home, which has been the recipe all season long for them to put up runs and I think they cash in. Baltimore starter Cade Povich and his 9.75 ERA in road games is something a healthy Twins lineup can jump all over.
The Orioles being out of the AL East race makes it more likely they’ll leave Povich in, and relieve him with subpar arms. But the O’s can still hit and Pablo Lopez has come back to earth in September with a 4.50 ERA. So combine that with a bullpen that has been an abject disaster, and we should see both teams contribute to getting this game over the total.
