Tiger Woods makes TGL debut, hits first tee shot with Jupiter Links GC
Golf legend Tiger Woods and his team Jupiter Links GC competed in their debut match at the SoFi Center in Palm Beach Gardens on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025.
Tiger Woods appeared during the CBS telecast of Sunday’s Genesis Invitational and predicted a resolution to the PGA Tour vs. LIV war as soon as this year.
He also said he plans to get on the golf course at a PGA Tour event soon and offered profuse thanks in two regards: for the outpouring of condolences after the passing of his mother Kultida Woods on Feb. 4, and for the response of tournament officials in the complicated process of moving the tournament he hosts from the Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., to Torrey Pines in La Jolla.
Woods has hosted the Genesis Invitational since 2020. It had to move from Riviera because of the damage in the Pacific Palisades area due to the Los Angeles wildfires.
Woods said bringing the warring factions of golf together was “going in the right direction,” after a meeting among PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan, Player-Director Adam Scott and President Donald Trump, a meeting Woods would have attended had it not been for his mother’s passing.
“We have another meeting coming up,” Woods told CBS golf anchor Jim Nantz, without giving specifics. “I think things are going to heal quickly. It’s been heading in the wrong direction for a number of years. The fans want all of us to play together, the top players playing together and we’re going to make that happen. It could be this year, or very soon this year.”
He also said golf fans can plan to see him soon in a PGA Tour event.
“My goal is to play more … I’ve got to work on that,” he said. “This process [not playing at the Genesis] was unexpected. I look forward to playing some big events.”
Two possibilities would be the Cognizant Classic in Palm Beach Gardens Feb. 27-March 2, at PGA National near his Jupiter home, or the Arnold Palmer Invitational in Orlando March 6-9, a tournament he’s won eight times.
What he said was unexpected was the passing of his mother.
“All of the players who reached out to me that were playing this week, the amount of texts and emails and nice messages of support I got has really helped,” he said of the response to his mother’s passing. “It really meant a lot to me.”
Woods again referred to his mother, as he has frequently, as “my rock.” While his father Earl was working for McDonnell Douglas, his mother drove him to numerous junior tournaments, walked every step and kept track of his statistics.
Woods also said his mother was the parent who stayed on him about his grades.
“She was hard on me about school, about getting good grades and doing well in school and beyond that,” he said. “If I didn’t get homework done, I wasn’t allowed to play. She’s meant everything to me and losing her has been a very hard and difficult process to go through.”
Woods had committed to play in the tournament on Feb. 6, but backed out four days later, saying his game wasn’t in tournament shape and that he was still processing the death of his mother.
The Genesis Invitational and players paid tribute to Kultida Woods. The tournament staff put a white flag at the seventh hole all week to honor her Buddhist faith, which honors the color white as a symbol of purity wisdom and longevity. The No. 7 is tied to the seven factors of Buddhist enlightenment.
Players and tournament staff also wore pins to honor her.
Woods was last seen playing golf with President Trump on Super Bowl Sunday. He will tee it up for Jupiter Hills in the TGL Golf League on Monday in West Palm Beach.
