The Sun Day Red line of apparel from Tiger Woods (and TaylorMade) went on sale in May, shortly after Woods debuted his new logo on hats, polo shirts and pants at the Masters Tournament. Woods also wore golf shoes designed by the Sun Day Red team at Augusta National, but the company’s first high-performance footwear didn’t make its way to retail until now.
Priced at $250, the Pioneer Cypress hits the market during the week of the Hero World Challenge, the tournament Woods hosts in the Bahamas.
Woods, a 15-time major champion who spent 27 years with Nike in a partnership that reimagined golf fashion, was heavily involved in a creation process that over the past year saw nearly 20 prototypes and design adjustments. He worked closely with Sun Day Red’s footwear production creation team, led by shoe designer Charley Hudak, to get the Pioneer Cypress to his exact specifications, down to the stitch count.
The first release of the Pioneer Cypress features three main colorways — black/silver, white/silver and grey/navy — as well as a limited-edition shoe in black or white with a red tread plate (outsole) that retails for $275.
Woods switched to FootJoy for several years after parting with Nike and the first Sun Day Red footwear release unmistakably pays homage to a classic golf shoe silhouette while adding some modern styling for comfort and control. Woods insisted the product have superior comfort for walking the course and wanted the profile of the shoe as low to the ground as possible to ensure stability, control and feel.
There are a few distinct touches to the Pioneer Cypress that aren’t visible at first glance.
Woods, who has undergone multiple knee and back surgeries, apparently isn’t a fan of having to bend over and re-tie his shoes during a round because his new shoes have waxed polyester blend laces to ensure they don’t come undone during play.
The Pioneer Cypress comes with two sock liners — one flat and the other with a massage footbed — that feature Woods’ signature along with two of his motivational expressions, “Do the work,” and “Put in the time.” Additionally, the spike design on the bottom of the shoe features four claw marks in the front and one in the heel to mimic a tiger’s footprint and provide a “tiger-like claw effect” in the ground.
Just how much Tiger will be wearing the new shoes in competition in 2025 — whether on the PGA Tour or the new indoor TGL league of which he’s a co-founder — remains to be seen. Woods made only five official starts in 2024, the four majors among them, and his best finish was 60th at the Masters, but he continues to move the needle on and off the course in the golf world. The most recent line of Sun Day Red apparel was unveiled in September.
