Five possible Breeders’ Cup contenders were among the graded-stakes winners with published works Thursday.
They included Fierceness, winner of the Grade 1 Travers and Jim Dandy (G2) in his last two starts, and Mentee, winner of the Futurity (G3) last out at the Belmont at the Big A meet. Both are Repole Stable homebreds and are trained by Todd Pletcher.
Fierceness, winner of last year’s Breeders’ Cup Juvenile and a leading contender for this year’s Classic, breezed five furlongs to the outside of stakes-placed Classic Catch, breaking off about one length behind his workmate before coming to even terms with him in the turn. Fierceness was nudged along in the lane to overtake Classic Catch and drew off from him through the wire, completing the five furlongs in 1:01.69 and galloping out in 1:14.67, according to New York Racing Association clockers.
“It was another excellent breeze, pretty much what we’ve become accustomed to seeing from him,” Pletcher told the NYRA media team. “Very relaxed throughout, finished up nicely, galloped out well. He’s always been a really exceptional work horse, pretty push-button. It seems like he does it so easily.
“We wanted a good, solid work today, and I thought we got that,” Pletcher added.
Mentee is pointed to either the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf or the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Turf Sprint, with Pletcher saying the Juvenile Turf likely will be the first preference. He breezed a half-mile in company with Noble Confessor. Mentee was about a half-length back to the outside of his workmate through the turn, but the pair came together to finish up in tandem down the lane, completing the four furlongs in 49.39 seconds before Mentee inched clear past the wire for the gallop out in 1:02.58.
“I thought it was a good work from him,” Pletcher said. “It looked like he was moving well. He’s got a great personality and is very laid back and easy to train.”
