Newgrange, unraced since finishing fifth in the Grade 2 San Diego Handicap in July, returned to the work tab Thursday for trainer Phil D’Amato.
The 5-year-old son of Violence closed out 2023 with a victory in the San Antonio (G2) and opened 2024 by winning the San Pascual (G2).
After a sixth-place finish in the Santa Anita Handicap (G1), he got a bit of a rest before the San Diego Handicap.
He worked once in August before returning Thursday to go three furlongs at Los Alamitos in 37.6 seconds, seventh fastest of 10 at the distance.
Newgrange was one of 12 graded-stakes winners with published works Thursday.
Nutella Fella (Runhappy), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Hopeful), worked three furlongs in 39.3 seconds at Saratoga on Thursday morning. It was the fourth fastest of six works at the distance. This was his first work since his last race. In his last start, he placed third in the Woody Stephens (G1) going seven furlongs on the main track at Saratoga on June 8 for trainer Gary Contessa.
Tamara (Bolt d’Oro), a Grade 1 winner (2023 Del Mar Debutante), worked six furlongs in 1:11.4 at Del Mar on Thursday morning. It was the only works at the distance. Her previous work was eight days ago going five furlongs at Santa Anita. In her last start, she placed seventh in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies going 1 1/16 miles on the main track at Santa Anita on Nov. 3 for trainer Richard Mandella.
