Following the win over Duke, Kentucky has reached a portion of its schedule vs. teams that don’t necessarily move the needle for the common college basketball fan. Ryan Lemond so lovingly describes these opponents as “Poop State.” Lipscomb and Jackson State aren’t exactly powerhouses, but they will compete.
While scouring through the World Wide Web, I discovered a team that could not compete against the Wildcats, or really anyone, for that matter. They might very well be the worst college basketball team in the history of college basketball.
Free Lutheran Bible College is a seminary school in Plymouth, Minnesota that was founded in 1966 with an enrollment of approximately 135 students. The Conquerers compete in the Northern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference against small schools in Minnesota, the Dakotas, and Manitoba. They don’t do much conquering or competing.
“FLBC takes athletics seriously, but maybe not in the way you’d expect,” the school says on its website. “While we have enjoyed championship victories in the past, playing sports at FLBC is about more than wins.”
That’s a good thing because they are not winning.
Free Lutheran Bible College started the season 0-2. They opened with an 85-5 loss to Faith Baptist Bible. Westin Jenson made their only two field goals on 24 attempts. On the following day, they lost 87-11 to Crown’s JV team. Yes, there are still JV teams at some levels in college basketball.
If you’re doing the math, Free Lutheran Bible College has been outscored 172-16 in two games this season. The sad part is they were probably worse a year ago.
During the 2023-24 season, Free Lutheran Bible College went 0-24. One of those losses was by 106 points. They almost lost by 100 points in a conference game, falling 124-39 to Canadian Mennonite University. The only game that wasn’t decided by at least 17 points was a 10-point loss to the Free Lutheran Baptist College alumni team. They couldn’t even beat their old former players.
One Redditor manages a spreadsheet that rates every basketball team in the world, from National Teams right down to Mid-Majors and even JUCO basketball. Last year, the Conquerers were ranked last out of 2,859 teams.
This is not to pile on a school that is subpar at sports and does not prioritize them whatsoever. Their poor performance is of a magnitude not seen on this scale in the sport. It will be fascinating to see if and when they can finally score one in the win column. Their next game is a week away at home against Emmaus. I’d hate to be the team that ends this losing streak that dates back to Feb. 24, 2023.
Now comes the fun part. Arizona has navigated one of the toughest nonconference schedules in the country, though it didn’t fare too well with a 6-5 record
