I tend to overpack for trips. Somehow I always convince myself I need five pairs of shoes even though I rarely wear more than two. This, in itself, isn’t an issue. It’s only a problem when I inevitably pick up souvenirs, gifts, and local goods only to discover I don’t have an inch of extra room in my suitcase. Fortunately, I’ve learned an easy, inexpensive travel hack – the Samsonite Foldaway Duffel. I just pop it into my luggage and double my packing space for the return trip.
The Samsonite Foldaway Duffel comes in two sizes, medium and extra large. I have the medium. When expanded, it offers the same packing space as a carry-on suitcase. The packable duffel bag folds into a slim, built-in carrying pouch, so it’s easy to stow in your luggage or backpack. The bags comes in three colors – orange tiger, evening blue, and black.
The bag is made of sturdy 600 denier nylon poly with PU backing.
Before I discovered the Samsonite Foldaway Duffel, I tried a couple of other brands. The first, made by a trendy luggage company, cost over twice as much as the Samsonite. This brand also had a nylon exterior, but it was shiny, silky, and flimsy. I’m referring to it in the past tense because I checked it at the airport and it was ripped to shreds by the time I picked it up at baggage claim.
Next, I paid $9.99 for a cheap packable duffel from a brand I’d never heard of. The zipper broke the first time I used it. It was a clear sign I needed to do some research before purchasing a replacement. I needed something that packs small, holds as much as a carry-on, and is durable enough to carry heavy loads and withstand the rigors of the airport baggage handling process.
The Samsonite Foldaway Duffel met every criterion. The 600 denier nylon poly with PU backing exterior is tough enough to stand up to rough handling or skidding across rough surfaces like cement. I’ve loaded it with more than 30lbs and it could have easily handled more. The bag can be carried with handles or with a removable, adjustable strap. I’ve been using it for two years and it still looks like brand new.
Finally, I can purchase gifts and souvenirs to my heart’s content. The Samsonite Packable Duffel frequently sells out. When it’s in stock, you can find it on Amazon.
