Ryan Wood and Tom Silverstein preview Packers-Eagles game in Brazil
PackersNews reporters Ryan Wood and Tom Silverstein are at Corinthians Arena for the Packers opener vs. the Eagles in Brazil.
It’s like a slip ‘n slide inside Arena Corinthians, the site of the Green Bay Packers’ game against the Philadelphia Eagles in São Paulo, Brazil, on Friday night.
No, it’s not raining that is causing players on both teams to be slipping all over the place in the first half of the first-ever game in South America.
But there haven’t been too many plays where players haven’t slipped on the field. And Packers head coach Matt LaFleur and Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni are probably just hoping each of their teams leave this game without any ankle injuries.
“We got to do whatever we got to do,” LaFleur said in a halftime interview. “Maybe change your cleats. Yeah, it’s been a problem.”
Arena Corinthians has been transformed into an NFL game for the first time. It’s home of the Brazilian soccer club Corinthians Paulista.
“The field is annoying,” analyst Chris Simms said during the halftime show on NBC.
Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James was among many on social media who reacted with disgust over the field conditions. He noted: “Man, this field sucks!!”
Wisconsin native and former three-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year JJ Watt also added his thoughts on the issues. Watt knows the difference between soccer and football fields. He has ownership stake in Burnley FC, an English soccer team.
