For a second year, nurse practitioner is the best job to have in the United States, U.S. News & World Report says in its new ranking of the best professions around the country.
The news magazine cited its attractive median salary ($126,260) and the high number of jobs projected to be available in the field in the next 10 years (135,500).
A nurse practitioner is an “advanced practice registered nurse with advanced clinical training who provides direct patient care,” according to the American Nurses Association. “They offer a range of services, such as ordering and interpreting diagnostic tests, treating acute and chronic conditions, and prescribing medication.
Coming in second place on the list was IT manager, with a median salary of $169,510 and 106,900 projected jobs in the next decade.
The magazine acknowledged that career satisfaction is subjective. “Some career qualities, however, are universally desired,” the magazine stated. “Workers tend to prefer higher salaries, ample job opportunities and avenues for promotion.”
U.S. News rated jobs based on five criteria: future prospects, wage potential, employment, job safety and stability and work-life balance. Future prospects, which the magazine defined as the “amount of sustained growth that occupations or fields are expected to see in the next few years” was given the most weight, followed by wage potential.
One job that pays unusually well in South Florida: being a pilot. U.S. News found that the greater Miami metropolitan area, which includes Palm Beach County, ranks among the five best-paying metropolitan areas or cities for pilots.
Port St. Lucie, meanwhile ranked among the five best-paying cities for emergency medicine physicians.
