Alabama football has plenty of time to figure out who will start in 2025.
First, there are spring practices. Then there’s A-Day. Then, after the roster is settled after the spring transfer window, the Crimson Tide will hold fall camp practices.
And position battles don’t necessarily have to stop once the season starts. They can, and often do, continue into the season.
But now that the first transfer portal window has closed, we have a better sense of the makeup of the roster and what positions might have some of the best competition. Another way to phrase it: The positions that have the most uncertainty.
Two months from the start of spring practices, here’s an early look at some of the top position battles to watch for 2025.
Heading into the offseason, Alabama has two vacancies to fill. One at left guard, and one at right tackle.
Left guard Tyler Booker departed for the NFL Draft, and starting right tackle Elijah Pritchett transferred. Meanwhile, left tackle Kadyn Proctor, center Parker Brailsford and right guard Jaeden Roberts are all set to stay for another season.
Who will fill the other two spots?
The top contenders for left guard figure to be Texas A&M transfer Kam Dewberry and incoming freshman Michael Carroll. Geno VanDeMark is also a veteran interior blocker who is an option, but he might be best as a swing option to play either guard or center.
Meanwhile, at right tackle, Wilkin Formby is an early favorite for the opening as someone with experience there. But Jackson Lloyd, another incoming freshman, is an intriguing option, too.
Alabama has several competitors for each spot, and it will be worth monitoring how these battles progress.
Ryan Williams and Germie Bernard are going to be two main options again this year. That doesn’t figure to change. Both starters are back and expected to start again.
The question is more so who the No. 3 and No. 4 receivers on the field will be.
Alabama on its depth chart lists a “Z” receiver, an “X” receiver and a “H” receiver. Bernard was listed as the Z and Williams was listed as the X in 2024. The H role is more open. That’s a spot Cole Adams worked from before his season-ending injury. Then, in the ReliaQuest Bowl, Rico Scott was listed as the starter there with Jaylen Mbakwe, a recent receiver convert, listed as his backup.
Alabama also brought in Miami receiver Isaiah Horton, perhaps the biggest addition of the offseason. How the Crimson Tide uses Horton mixed with Williams and Bernard will be worth watching.
Frankly, how Alabama uses this entire group, and who earns the most snaps, will be something to follow throughout the spring, summer and fall.
Alabama has a good problem at its inside linebacker spots.
Deontae Lawson is back. So is Justin Jefferson. Meanwhile it added Nikhai Hill-Green from Colorado. There are technically only two inside linebacker spots, so who plays the most?
There is a possibility Alabama gets all three on the field in some packages. But which two play the most? That battle is one to watch, likely between Jefferson and Hill-Green.
The job is Ty Simpson’s to lose, but he has to go out and win it. The starting quarterback job won’t be handed to him.
He will have to fend off Austin Mack and incoming freshman Keelon Russell. This will be the top battle to watch in the spring and possibly into the summer and fall depending on how the winner performs.
