With 2024 drawing to a close it’s a good chance to take a look back at the year in professional tennis.
For a number of players – most notably Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz – it has proved a solid year on the ATP Tour.
Taylor Fritz can probably take some pride in the year too as can a few other players finding their way in a brutal sport.
For others, however, it’s a time to refresh their minds and rid themselves of some horrible memories from 2024.
Ahead of the new year, we’ve looked at three players who will hope to never speak of 2024 ever again and must be considered as the biggest disappointments of the year on the ATP Tour.
We almost feel bad including the Danish performer in this compilation but 2024 won’t be a year he looks back at with any real fondness.
Rune was number four in the world in August 2023 and finished the year in eighth place.
In 2024 his regression has been clear, however, and the current world number 13 needs to go back to basics in 2025 to reignite his career.
At 21 he has bags of time on his side and he is still finding his way on the professional circuit.
Runs to the fourth round at the French Open and Wimbledon salvaged something from the campaign but losing in round two in Australia and round one at the US Open made for a drab year.
His lowest ebb during 2024 came in Hangzhou when he was drubbed by the world number 160 Yasutaka Uchiyama in straight sets.
As a British supporting tennis fan, this one doesn’t feel good but it’s well worthy of inclusion.
Norrie has wilted under the pressure of the new kid on the block Jack Draper and even his shock win over the Great Britain number one at Wimbledon can’t save his face here.
The experienced British player just hasn’t got going in 2024 and his performances have lacked verve and any real spark has been sapped out of his game.
Norrie finished last year on the cusp of the top 16 in world tennis but now his ranking is down at number 49 and if he’s not careful he will be outside the top 50 on the ATP Tour.
The 29-year-old was in the top eight back in 2022 and began 2024 in good fashion reaching the fourth round at the Australian Open for the first time.
However, the year slowly got worse and his biggest setback came when he was beaten by world number 773 Jack Pinnington-Jones at the Nottingham Open.
In 2023, Eubanks captured the hearts of the English tennis fans when he enjoyed a superb run to the Wimbledon quarter-final.
During that epic and truly memorable tournament for Eubanks, he defeated Cameron Norrie and Stefanos Tsistipas before losing to Daniil Medvedev in the last eight.
The work he did on the court in 2023 propelled him up to number 29 in the world rankings but he was unable to build on that in 2024.
Eubanks lost in the first round of three of the majors and could only win one match at the Australian Open back in January.
He’s now outside the top 100 players in the world and suffered a crushing defeat to the world number 220 Quentin Halys at Wimbledon.
