It’s been a long and hard road for Madison Keys to claim one of the biggest prizes on offer in the sport of tennis.
In January, Keys managed to achieve what every tennis player craves and got her hands on the Australian Open title – her first Grand Slam title since turning professional.
Keys is now 30-years-old and has been working towards this moment for a little while. Having reached the US Open final in 2017 and losing, she might have been forgiven for not believing this moment would come along again.
The American player has always possessed a lot of potential. In fact, it would have been a travesty had she gone the whole duration of her career without lifting one of the four big titles in tennis.
Radwanska provided the opposition when Keys first went on a run to a Wimbledon quarter-final back in 2015 and after the Polish player prevailed she had some strong words of encouragement for her beaten opponent.
She predicted that the tennis world would be seeing a lot more of Madison Keys in the future and suggested that she had the game to potentially win Grand Slam titles in the future.
Radwanska said in her press conference: “Well, I knew she’s a very powerful player and everything is going to be going to my side very fast, doesn’t matter from which side. I knew that. Of course, her serve is also very good. I think that was the key in that match, as well.
“It was hard because you really have to focus on your own serve because if you lose that serve, then you’re really in trouble. That’s why it was tough. You really have to be focused the whole match. Otherwise, not going to go your way. But you’re going to definitely see her more often in the future.”
The 30-year-old will have so much confidence going into the next tournament – and for the rest of the year. It’s the old cliche but once the first Grand Slam is off your back, the world is clearly your oyster.
Keys has been practicing with Elena Rybakina ahead of Indian Wells. The session looked like an intense one and ultimately she is leaving no stone unturned in the quest to give herself the edge.
It will be fascinating to see what Keys can achieve going forward this year. She’s a very likeable player on the tour and ultimately, Indian Wells will be a better competition for the first Grand Slam winner of the year being in it.
Radwanska was adamant after beating Keys all those years ago at Wimbledon that she’d come good and now she’s been proven spot on all along.
