Shane Lowry led the way coming into the third round of The 152nd Open on seven under par, as Justin Rose and debutant Daniel Brown ended the second round two shots back.
Englishman Brown was the surprise package on day one, ending his first day at a major with a joint lead alongside Lowry, but the Irishman powered through to end the second round on top of the pile, while plenty of big names, including Tiger Woods and Rory McIlroy, missed the cut in wild conditions on the Scottish coast.
The early starters on Saturday took advantage of more benign weather as South Korea’s Si Woo Kim made a hole-in-one on the 17th – the first player ever to do so on the 238-yard par three in 10 Open Championships at Royal Troon – and South Africa’s Thirston Lawrence recorded a flurry of birdies to leap into contention.

The Open 2024: Latest scores
-8 Lowry; -5 Brown -4 Rose, Henley; -3 Lawrence, Schauffele, Scheffler -2: Horschel, Burmester
No realistic birdie chances for either Brown or Lowry on the fifth, though they should make par.
Sam Burns continues his vein of form by climbing to -3 with a birdie at the 16th, and then making par on the 17th.
And it’s brilliant from Xander Schauffele as he holes a birdie on the Postage Stamp eighth! His tee shot landed within a foot, so it was an easy tap-in.
A little less fortunate for Cantlay as he moves level par after a bogey.

The Open 2024: Latest scores
-7 Lowry; -5 Brown -4 Rose, Henley; -3 Lawrence, Schauffele, Scheffler -2: Horschel, Burmester
Lawrence has finished for the day with an extremely impressive 65, and he goes into the clubhouse on -3.
Justin Rose has bogeyed five after that last birdie, and so he goes back to -4.
And Lowry is back into a two-stroke lead after sinking a 15-footer to go back up to -8.

Robert MacIntyre admits Open struggle has brought him back to earth with a bump
The Oban-based left-hander celebrated long into the night after triumphing in his home Scottish Open last Sunday but it has been a different story in Ayrshire this week.
After battling to make the Open cut on Friday, the 27-year-old again found the going tough in the third round, carding a one-over-par 72 to sit on six over.

The Open 2024: Latest scores
-7 Lowry; -4; Rose, Brown, Henley; -3 Lawrence, Schauffele, Scheffler -2: Horschel, Burmester
Brown is back up to -5 as he drains a putt on the third! He’s holding his own for now.
That takes him one shot better than Henley, who finds the green in regulation on the13th. He miscues the line of a birdie attempt from deep, but he’ll knock it in for par.
On four, Justin Rose plays a superb approach shot to take himself pin high and within a few feet of the flag – surely another birdie for the Englishman.
Scheffler saves par on the fourth, but it could – and perhaps should – have been so much better, as his birdie putt lips out.
Lawrence is on 17, looking to land a potentially pivotal couple of late birdies, but his first chance is missed and he enters the 18th on -3.
Both Day and Morikawa card birdies to move to level par.

Si Woo Kim makes hole-in-one as Thriston Lawrence surges through field at Open
South Korea’s Si Woo Kim made a hole-in-one in the third round of the 152nd Open as Thriston Lawrence threatened to make more history at Royal Troon.
Kim was two over par after 16 holes but walked off the 17th back to level for the day after his tee shot pitched just short of the green and rolled inexorably into the cup on the 238-yard par three.
It is the first time a hole-in-one has been recorded on the 17th in 10 Open Championships at the South Ayrshire venue.

The Open 2024: Latest scores
-7 Lowry; -4; Rose, Brown; -3 Lawrence, Henley, Schauffele, Scheffler -2: Horschel, Burmester
Rose is so close with the birdie putt at three, but it teeters near the edge and he settles for par. Meanwhile on the 12th, Henley has gained another shot and he joins the chasing pack on -4.
Scheffler finds a fairway bunker on four, and he hooks himself out to give himself a good chance of the sand save.
On five, Schauffele has the chance to build on a great stat with another birdie, but he falls short, as does Lawrence on 16.
It’s pouring now on the Ayrshire coast, and it’s much more difficult conditions than those this morning.

The Open 2024: Latest scores
-7 Lowry; -4; Rose, Brown; -3 Lawrence, Henley, Schauffele, Scheffler -2: Horschel, Burmester
One bogey and one par for Rose to start his day, and he’s fallen to -4 alongside Brown. His approach on the third splits the pin and the bunker, but it overruns slightly.
Lawrence is still at three-under as he reaches the final few holes, but he’s found the sand trap with his second shot on 16. He scoops his way put and it’s pin high, though a little far to the right.
Brown has a birdie attempt on three but it’s uphill and hard to judge, and he falls short. Lowry has his own birdie chance, and it’s a more difficult line, and his goes from right to left and slightly wide. Both will make par though.

The Open 2024: Latest scores
-7 Lowry; -5 Rose; -4; Brown; -3 Lawrence, Henley, Schauffele -2: Horschel, Burmester, Scheffler
Henley drains a great putt on the 10th to take himself up to -3.
Bated breath from some on the as it briefly looks like Scheffler’s approach shot is flying in, but it carries a little further. He has a great chance at a birdie though, and he takes it! On to -3 for the world number one, and he looks calm and composed as he did yesterday.
On four, Schauffele fails to find the green in regulation, instead landing in the rough. His next shot is eased onto the green, but it’s a difficult putt for par.
Horschel stays on -2 after narrowly missing a birdie shot.
Lowry has engineered his first birdie attempt of the day – and it shaves the hole, but he’ll manage to save par. His main rival (for now) bogeys the first, and Brown is down to -4.

The Open 2024: Latest scores
-7 Lowry; -5 Rose, Brown; -3 Lawrence, Schauffele -2: Horschel, Burmester, Scheffler
The final two tee off, starting with Daniel Brown. Some early luck too, as his ball rolls and rolls but just rests on the edge of the sand trap.
Shane Lowry goes in a similar direction, but his ball does roll into the bunker, and there might be some early work to do to save par for the overnight leader.
On two, Scheffler is just an inch unlucky once more – that’s two birdie putts in a row that have been missing just an inch or so.
At the other end on 18, Thomas guides his birdie attempt to within tap-in distance – he knocks it in for a round of 67, and ends the day on level par.

The Open 2024: Latest scores
-7 Lowry; -5 Rose, Brown; -3 Lawrence, Schauffele -2: Horschel, Burmester, Scheffler
Henley finishes the front nine with a birdie, so he goes up to -2.
Lawrene’s tee shot on the par-three 14th finds the tee, but it just needed a little more to take it within easy birdie distance. He’ll finish with par for -3.
Thomas tees off for his last hole of the day, and he avoids the fairway bunkers as he looks to enter the red and stay in contention.
Not the best start for Rose as he finds the greenside bunker with his second shot.
On three, Cantlay faces a difficult line for the birdie putt, and he can’t sink it, so will take par. Schauffele’s line is much kinder, and knocks it right to left before it sinks in for -3!
