The NBA officially announced a three-game suspension without pay for Joel Embiid.
The Philadelphia 76ers big man fell under the league’s microscope after a heated altercation with a media member. Following the 76ers’ loss to the Grizzlies, Embiid confronted Marcus Hayes of the Philadelphia Inquirer about a recent column that mentioned Embiid’s late brother and son. After the two exchanged words, Embiid shoved Hayes and the two had to be separated.
While many understood Embiid’s frustration regarding Hayes’ seemingly personal attack, the NBA made clear that the one-time MVP’s actions were unacceptable.
“Mutual respect is paramount to the relationship between players and media in the NBA,” Executive Vice President and Heat of Basketball Operations Joe Dumars said. “While we understand Joel was offended by the personal nature of the original version of the reporter’s column, interactions must remain professional on both sides and can never turn physical.”
Of course, Embiid has yet to suit up for a game this season as he continues to deal with knee issues. With this being the case, the suspension will not take place until the team gives him the green light to return to the court. Considering the 76ers sit a concerning 1-5 to begin the year, this news feels like it only adds insult to injury.
