The 2025 edition of the Australian Open has been consigned to the tennis history books with Jannik Sinner and Madison Keys reigning supreme in Melbourne.
Sinner retained the title that he won for the first time in 2024. He thrashed Alexander Zverev in the final and only dropped a single set throughout the entire tournament.
Zverev was consoled by Sinner at the end of their match. In truth, it proved an underwhelming final with the Italian not even needing to stave off a single break point during the three sets.
In the women’s draw, it proved to be second time lucky for Keys. She overcame the world number one Aryna Sabalenka to prevail after losing in the US Open final back in 2017.
Andy Roddick admitted he was wrong about Keys after her epic win. The final was a real classic and she displayed some seriously strong tennis to oust the current best female player on the planet.
After some extremely exciting matches, we’ve tried to pick the best ones. We’ve looked at five crackers from the latest Australian Open and it really did prove to be a tournament to remember.
This was when the Australian Open saw the crowd become a little bit unsavoury for the first time. Draper was never going to be backed heavily up against an Aussie player but things got a little out of hand.
In truth, this match was a cracker. Kokkinakis was looking to get beyond round two of the Australian Open for the first time in his career and he might look back on this one and wonder if he will ever have a better chance.
For fans, a five-set thriller is always the desire at these major tournaments. This one swung in both directions and in the fourth set, Kokkinakis found himself serving for a place in round three.
He couldn’t get over the line, however, and after struggling with a shoulder injury throughout the match, Kokkinakis eventually went down 7-6, 3-6, 6-3, 5-7, 3-6 with Draper setting up a clash with another Aussie, Aleksandar Vukic.
The Great Britain number one was booed throughout the contest. Danielle Collins bemoaned the crowds at the tournament this year and at several points of this match, Draper found himself cupping his ear towards the Melbourne crowd.
After seeing off Draper in round four, Alcaraz set up a mouthwatering clash with 10-time Australian Open champion Djokovic – and the pre-match billing was worth it as the pair put on a show.
Djokovic was criticised by John McEnroe who felt the Serbian wasn’t really injured. He had a medical time-out early in the match but recovered despite losing the first set to take this one in four.
Djokovic sent a heartwarming message to Alexander Zverev after the German was beaten in the final. The 37-year-old was forced to retire against the world number two after just a single set in the semi-final.
Alcaraz was blown away by Djokovic despite his injury, however. The player who went in search of Grand Slam number 25 in Melbourne came through 4-6, 6-4, 6-3, 6-4 but injury robbed him of the chance to compete for another title.
You will be hard-pushed to find anyone who isn’t happy for Madison Keys lifting her maiden Grand Slam title eight years after her only other appearance in a final at the US Open.
Keys defied the odds to claim the title in Melbourne. The American richly deserved her win, beating number two seed Iga Swiatek in the last four and the world number one Aryna Sabalenka in the final.
Keys posted on Instagram after this famous win. The joy was there for all to see and she performed her media duties with the trophy not leaving her side and sipping a glass of well-deserved champagne.
Keys came through 6-3, 2-6, 7-5 and in the process achieved a lifelong dream of holding aloft one of the biggest prizes in tennis and she will now be seeking more this year.
Not since the French Open had Russian star Medvedev failed to reach the third round of a major tournament and as a result, he will remember his maiden meeting with Learner Tien for all of the wrong reasons.
This was the Grand Slam where some of the game’s young talents announced their arrival on the scene. Alex Michelsen and Joao Fonseca also enjoyed stunning results but this win for Tien was a truly memorable occasion.

The 19-year-old had never played in the main draw at the Australian Open before this year. Now, he will be buzzing for other tournaments this year as he looks to claim more big scalps following his 6-3, 7-6, 6-7, 1-6, 7-6 victory over the former US Open champion.
Tien managed to avoid a case of After the Lord Mayor’s Show following his result against Medvedev too. In the third round, he defeated Frenchman Corentin Moutet before succumbing to Lorenzo Sonego in the next round.
It’s hard not to feel some sympathy for Tsitsipas. A drab 2024 saw him make the quarter-final at the Australian Open and then fail to get beyond round four at any of the other major tournaments.
With that in mind, he’d have been keen to get off to a flyer in Melbourne. Instead, he came up against a sensational Alex Michelsen and the Greek performer was packing his bags with the tournament just one day old.
The American player showcased some serious power against Tsitsipas who bemoaned how the game has changed afterwards, expressing concerns over his ability to keep competing.
Michelsen drew praise from Taylor Fritz after this serious upset in the first round. He came through in four sets, taking the match 7-5, 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 before going on a run to the fourth round.
The 20-year-old beat James McCabe in round two, despatched number 19 seed Karen Khachanov in round three and then exited the tournament to Alex de Minaur who thrashed him 6-0, 7-6, 6-3.
