During the 2022-23 season, the Boston Celtics lost Damon Stoudamire ahead of the playoffs. Stoudamire had agreed to become the new head coach of Georgia Tech, and as such, had to be present for his new teams recruitment cycle. Stoudamire’s absence was clearly felt on the Celtics sidelines throughout the ensuing postseason run.
Now, it looks like history could repeat itself. Sam Cassell is reportedly a target for Florida State University. Cassell, a Florida State alum, has spoken of his desire to step into a head coaching role, albeit in the NBA. Nevertheless, if the Celtics associate head coach does choose to move to Florida, Boston would once again be short-handed heading into the postseason.
In the latest episode of The Celtics Chronicle podcast, hosts Adam Taylor and Billy Calabrese discussed the potential impact of losing Cassell midway through the season. The duo also explained why moving to the collegiate ranks could be a smart move for the highly-rated assistant, as the NBA continues to skew toward younger coaches as it ushers in a new generation of basketball minds.
