Djokovic has earned four victories en route to the semi-finals in Shanghai, and he can tie Nadal’s record by securing the title.
Here, we look at the seven players who have won the most matches at ATP Masters 1000 level.
Pete Sampras won 190 of the 260 matches he contested at ATP Masters events, with his first win at this level coming at the 1990 Indian Wells Masters.
The American earned more match victories at the Miami Open (42) than any other Masters tournament. Sampras won his maiden Masters title at the 1992 Cincinnati Open, while his 11th and last came in Miami in 2000.
Tomas Berdych won 191 of the 308 matches he played at ATP Masters 1000 level, with 123 on hard courts, 60 on clay and eight on carpet.
The Czech won his maiden Masters match in Indian Wells in 2005 and his last at the 2018 Miami Masters.
Berdych earned more victories in Miami (34) than at any other Masters 1000 event. He secured his only Masters crown at the 2005 Paris Masters.

Andre Agassi earned 209 victories from his 280 ATP Masters matches, with 168 wins on hard courts, 22 on clay and 19 on carpet courts.
The American won his first Masters match at the 1990 Indian Wells Masters, while his last victory came at the same tournament in 2006.
Agassi won more matches at the Miami Open (59) than any other Masters tournament. He claimed his maiden Masters title in Miami in 1990 and his 17th and last at the 2004 Cincinnati Open.
Andy Murray won 230 of the 331 matches he played at Masters 1000 events, with 177 wins coming on hard courts, 52 on clay and one on carpet.
The Brit earned his maiden Masters 1000 victory at the 2005 Cincinnati Masters, while his last win at this level was at the 2024 Miami Open.
Murray amassed more wins in Cincinnati (35) than at any other Masters tournament. He won his first Masters 1000 crown at the 2008 Cincinnati Masters, while his 14th and last came at the 2016 Paris Masters.
Roger Federer won 381 of his 489 matches at ATP Masters 1000 level, with 264 wins on hard courts, 113 on clay and four wins on carpet.
The Swiss earned his first Masters 1000 match victory at the 2000 Miami Open and his last at the 2019 Shanghai Masters.
Federer won more matches at the Indian Wells Masters (66) than any other Masters 1000 tournament. He collected his maiden Masters trophy at the 2002 Hamburg Masters, while his 28th and final title came at the 2019 Miami Open.
Djokovic has won 408 of the 497 matches he has contested at ATP Masters 1000 events, with 269 wins on hard courts, 137 on clay and two on carpet courts.
The Serbian has won more matches at the Italian Open (68) than any other Masters 1000 tournament. He secured his first Masters crown at the 2007 Miami Open, while his record-extending 40th and most recent title came at the 2023 Paris Masters.
Djokovic won his first Masters 1000 match at the 2005 Paris Masters.
Nadal won 410 of the 500 matches he played at ATP Masters 1000 tournaments, earning 210 wins on hard courts and 200 on clay.
The Spaniard won his first Masters 1000 match at the 2003 Monte Carlo Masters, while his last victory came at the 2024 Italian Open.
Nadal won more matches at the Monte Carlo Masters (73) than any other Masters 1000 event. He claimed his maiden Masters 1000 crown in Monte Carlo in 2005, while his 36th and last title came at the 2021 Italian Open.
