Chris Beard considers Bob Knight a mentor.
That much was clear at halftime Tuesday night, when his Ole Miss Rebels had a 23-point lead on Kentucky.
“That’s Bob Knight. Victory favors the most aggressive team, and the team that makes the fewest mistakes,” he told ESPN.
Ole Miss (17-6, 6-4) are in the top half of the Southeastern Conference standings after thumping Kentucky. The Rebels narrowly lost to Purdue in November and challenged No. 1 Auburn last week.
Beard’s extensive coaching history includes a decade as an associate head coach under Bob and Pat Knight at Texas Tech from 2001-11. He coached the Red Raiders from 2016-21, taking them to the 2019 Final Four.
Texas, his alma mater, hired him away from Texas Tech in 2021. During his second season, he was charged with assaulting his fiancee, and was fired though the charges were dropped.
Ole Miss hired Beard just after the 2022-23 season ended, and he owns a 37-18 record. He has the Rebels close to the national rankings.
