Monday’s TGL matches were do-or-die for Rory McIlroy’s Boston Common Golf, but unfortunately, luck wasn’t on their side. In a nail-biting contest, Cameron Young edged out McIlroy at the Sofi Centre, while Xander Schauffele’s incredible comeback sealed the deal for New York GC.
New York officially clinched the final playoff spot, while Boston was eliminated, losing 10-6.
After the match, Adam Scott expressed his disappointment.
“Anytime you have a loss, it’s disappointing… I felt like we were a little unlucky overall on the season.” He continues, “I felt like we played better than our results.”
But did they?
Schauffele, who had been sidelined with a rib cage injury since his team’s debut match, made a stunning return. He “threw the hammer” at the 12th hole, sinking a crucial birdie to beat Adam Scott and secure two points for his team. That gave them a lead they would not relinquish in what was a back-and-forth match.
With Boston Common needing two more points to force overtime, Schauffele delivered again, chipping in from seven feet away on the final hole.
Surprisingly, despite their early exit, McIlroy and his team remained positive about their TGL experience. Scott praised the innovative format, saying, “I think the head-to-head and the whole innovation in here really has a future.”
On the other hand, the Irishman felt “proud” of his brainchild, TGL, even amid numerous technology backlashes. The golf world has criticized TGL’s simulator for lacking “accuracy”, a crucial aspect of playing in front of big screens.
However, McIlroy’s optimism is shared by Scott, who praised the excitement and innovation of the head-to-head format.
“I think I’ll just echo what Keegan and Adam said. It’s been a lot of fun being in here, competing against the best players in the world, competing with some of the best players in the world.”
“Look, I’ve been sort of a part of this since it was just an idea, so to see it come to life this year and to see the reception to it, that’s been really, really cool and something that I know I’m very proud of and all the team behind this concept are very proud of, as well.”
As the TGL semifinals approach, the focus shifts to the remaining four teams: New York GC, Atlanta Drive GC, The Bay GC, and Los Angeles GC.
These teams will clash on March 17th and 18th, vying for a spot in the championship. The question on everyone’s mind is: which team will claim victory at take the inaugural title?
