Under the stoic gaze of Matthew McConaughey, Texas football took advantage of playing a postseason home game Saturday, defeating Clemson, 38-24.

The Longhorns‘ win in the College Football Playoff means they will play Arizona State in the semifinals. Texas versus Arizona State is scheduled for 1 p.m. CT New Year’s Day at the Peach Bowl in Atlanta.

The winner of that game moves onto the CFP semifinal at the Cotton Bowl. The potential opponents at that point would be Oregon or the winner of Tennessee and Ohio State’s first-round game.

If you’ll remember, Arizona State was awarded the fourth seed and the coveted first-round bye by winning the Big 12, surpassing BYU, Colorado and Iowa State in the last month. Texas’ second loss of the season against Georgia in the SEC title game knocked the then-top-ranked Horns to the fifth seed.

But the Longhorns looked determined to dispatch the Tigers at Royal-Memorial Stadium, leading from wire-to-wire.

With one win down, the Texas get a little more than a week off and head east.
