LUBBOCK, Texas (KCBD) – Walking inside the Dustin R. Womble Football Center means you’re walking into all things Texas Tech football.
After walking in the front lobby, the trophy room greets Red Raiders, displaying bowl game hardware and individual awards.
Next is the spa area where players can relax, and then it’s off to the state-of-the-art weight room, equipped with custom plates and dumbbells, and any other equipment needed to keep the team in shape.
From there, players can enjoy the nutrition area in order to fuel up for game day and the recovery lounge features two water pressure beds.
Texas Tech coach Joey McGuire shared his thoughts on the new facility and how it’s played a role in recruiting.
“I started out whenever they would come in or where I’m on the phone and they’re flying in and I’m saying you’re going to come into as good of a facility there is in the country,” McGuire said. “Then when they get here, and these guys have been everywhere, I mean when you’re talking about the transfers, you’re talking about the most sought after guys in the country, there’s a number of them. They walk in and go coach, this isn’t comparable, this is the best facility in the country.”
The Womble Football Center even has its own barbershop, and all these things are just downstairs.
On the second floor, is the Patrick Mahomes walkthrough room. With the turf 25-by-20 yards, it makes this walkthrough room the largest in the country across both college football and the NFL.
“This is the best place I’ve ever been around,” running backs coach Garret McGuire said. “It’s insane, just all the access it has to all the players and what it can provide to our guys from a standpoint of recovery, in the weight room, nutrition, and the access and how easy it is to get around. That walkthrough room is absolutely insane, I think that’s a total game changer for us as a program.”
There’s also the team meeting room, which features over 200 seats, as well as other rooms for specific player positions.
Lastly, is the lounge area where players can relax and have some fun, along with a podcast studio.
“Whenever you talk about the flow of the building,” Joey said, “the access they have to the fueling station almost 24/7. Whenever you look at the spa area right off of their locker room with the hot tub cold tub and then walking right out of that into the weight room.”
With the halls lined with history as well, coaches and players agree the Womble Football Center is making a positive impact on Texas Tech Football.
“We’re always trying to find the edge each day,” Garret said. “What’s the best way to utilize that, what’s the best thing we can do to get the best out of that. This place is second to none.”
