Texas basketball (14-7, 3-5 SEC) came close to a third straight win over a ranked team at No. 23 Ole Miss on Wednesday, but the Rebels (16-5, 5-3) survived another big game from Tre Johnson for a 72-69 win.
Ole Miss had dropped three consecutive games but picked up the needed win under second-year coach Chris Beard, who coached against the Longhorns for the first time since he was fired from Texas two years ago after being arrested on a domestic violence charge. Johnson, the Texas freshman, who leads the SEC in scoring, racked up 22 points but missed a open 3-pointer from the corner that would have sent the game into overtime.
Arthur Kaluma, who missed Saturday’s thrilling win over Texas A&M with a sore knee, returned to the lineup with 12 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Ole Miss guard Sean Pedulla paced Ole Miss with a team-high 19 points.

A shot by Tre Johnson high off the glass with 10 seconds left bounces off the rim, and Arthur Kaluma barely misses the offensive rebound. Davon Barnes makes both of the folllwing free throws, and Johnson gets a great look at the tying triple but it bounces off the back of the rim. Life in the SEC.
After 14 ties and 11 lead changes, it’s down to the last minite in Oxford. Miss.
Tre Johnson (22 points) ties the game with a 3-pointer after a Luka Doncic-like pass from Tramon Mark, but Ole Miss answers with a bucket from Jaemyn Brakefield.
The biggest story of this game could be at the foul line. Ole Miss is 16-of-21 on free throws while Texas is 9-of-10. Tre Johnson (19 points) has all but two of those attempts.
Dre Davis turns a Texas turnover into a transition dunk, and the Rebels have their largest lead of the game. Oh, and it turns out Kadin Shedrick had a only three fouls, so he just draws his fourth. That’s good news for Texas, at least.
Texas holds its own with Tre Johnson getting some extended rest. Arthur Kaluma is up to 11 points, six boards and four assists despite his sore left knee. Oh, and Kadin Shedrick has his fourth foul. For better or worse, Texas fans will probably see a lot of Ze’Rik Onyema down the stretch.
This game has settled into an SEC streetfight, with both teams trading defensive jabs. There’s nothing coming easy for either squad at this point. Which Texas player will step up to help Tre Johnson, who leads the team with 13 points?
The Rebels have gotten very physical with Texas, and it’s paying off on the defensive end. The Horns are just 3-for-9 with two turnovers from the floor after the break. At least they can lean on Tre Johnson, who has 13 points. Keep an eye on Kadin Shedrick, the 6-foot-11 forward for Texas who was called for his third foul on a close call in the paint.
Texas probably thinks it should have a double-digit lead, but the Horns should be happy to have a halftime edge on the road. Tre Johnson leads the team with 11 points, Arthur Kaluma has seven points with two rebounds and three assists, and steady Kadin Shedrick has five points and four rebounds. And don’t overlook Devon Pryor, who has four points and four boards off the bench. If Texas can get through another half with just five turnovers, coach Rodney Terry will like his chances.
The Rebels are on a 9-0 run after a behind-the-back dribble and layup from Sean Pedulla. The Horns looked like they wanted to run away from Ole Miss, but the hosts have answered.
Texas is shooting 50% against a good Ole Miss defense. Tre Johnson leads the way with 11 points, and wing Devon Pryor keeps playing well off the bench with four points and three rebounds. The Longhorns have needed an energizer off the bech since Chendall Weaver went down with a hip injury, and Pryor may be filling that role.
Tre Johnson is heating up. The SEC’s leading scorer at 18.8 points per game, the 6-foot-6 freshman is up to nine points after draining a 3-pointer from the baseline. And UT has a 16-8 edge on the glass; Ole Miss has struggled with rebounding all season, and it’s hurting the Rebels again.
Ole Miss coach Chris Beard wasn’t happy with his team in that first TV timeout, and the Rebels have found some fire. They force a couple of turnovers, hit a couple of threes from Seean Pedulla and Drake Davis, and the Horns went 4 minutes without a bucket. Texas is showing some balance with six players already on the board.
A dream start for Texas, which has come out with a lot of energy. The Longhorns are 5-of-9 from the floor and are outrebounding Ole Miss 9-2. It’s telling that sophomore Devon Pryor was the first off the bench for UT; the 6-7 wing has been playing well and he’s already grabbed two boards.
Texas forward Arthur Kaluma, the team’s leading rebounder (8.2 rpg) and second-leading scorer (13.8 ppg), will start against Ole Miss after missing Saturday’s game against Texas A&M with a sore left knee. Jayson Kent, a transfer from Indiana State, moved into the starting lineup in place of Kaluma against Texas A&M and scored five points with one rebound in 26 minutes in his first start of the season and 63rd career collegiate start. He’ll move back to the bench with Kaluma back in the starting lineup after missing just one game.
