Texas A&M football has done a great job of addressing needs in the transfer portal so far this cycle. While a lot has been written about the additions at wide receiver and the growing group along the defensive line, the Ags have sneakily added some quality at tight end as well.
The TE group didn’t quite live up to expectations this past year for the Aggies. Klein’s usage of Ben Sinnott at Kansas State heralded a lot of targets for guys like Theo Ohrstrom, Tre Watson, and Shane Calhoun, but while there was some definite growth in Theo’s game, the position overall didn’t produce as much as A&M fans would have liked to see.
It looks like the Aggies are intent on addressing that, however. The additions of Micah Riley and Nate Boerkicher give the Ags some plus blockers, with the latter in particular bringing some sneaky receiver ability to the roster. However, A&M is still lacking a true jumbo pass-catching threat like they are hoping new signee Kiotti Armstrong may eventually develop into.
Now, though, it looks like they may have found just the guy to fill that role on their team. Longhorn fans were bullish on Amari Niblack, an Alabama transfer, taking up the mantle of the now-departed Gunnar Helm on next year’s team, but he gave Texas quite a shock when he announced his intent to enter the portal.
It looks like the Ags could be a beneficiary here. Niblack has reportedly set up a visit with the Aggies for tomorrow, according to Matt Zenitz and Pete Nakos.
It looks like the Longhorns’ loss could be the Aggies’ gain in this one. A&M has a chance to both fill a need on the roster and poke a thumb in the eye of their rival with one move. I’ll be interested to see how this one shakes out.
