The first Saturday game of the 2024 NFL season will be a meaningful one between two AFC division champions jockeying for playoff seeding. The Kansas City Chiefs host the Houston Texans for Week 16 hoping to keep the Buffalo Bills at bay in the race for the top spot in the postseason bracket and home field advantage through the AFC Championship game. But the status of quarterback Patrick Mahomes looms large over the proceedings.

The Chiefs (13-1) have yet to announce definitively whether Mahomes will play after he suffered a mild high-ankle sprain in a Week 15 win over the Cleveland Browns. Mahomes told reporters earlier this week the injury has responded well to treatment and he was a full participant at practice on Tuesday and Wednesday. Kansas City, led by its defense and Mahomes’ success in the clutch, has the best record in football despite the eighth-best point differential this year. This is the first of three games in 11 days for the Chiefs.

The Texans (9-5) have clinched the the AFC South division title for the second year in a row even though quarterback C.J. Stroud’s sophomore campaign in the NFL hasn’t been nearly as prolific as when he was named NFL rookie of the year for the 2023 season. But Houston, winners of three of its last past games, has counteracted that with a defense that ranks among the top five in the NFL this year in yards allowed per game. The end result has the Texans in position to host a wild card game again, and maybe more if they can close the season strong.
