Joao Fonseca is continuing to make headlines after his breakout performance at the Australian Open.
Fonseca made his Grand Slam debut at the Australian Open last month, coming through qualifying before beating top 10 player Andrey Rublev.
Following his straight sets win in Melbourne, Fonseca received high praise from many across the tennis world.
The Brazilian lost in the second round to Lorenzo Sonego, but after going on a 14-match winning streak Fonseca has broken inside the top 100.
Despite receiving big praise, Fonseca is not keen on comparisons to tennis legends, but those comparisons are only likely to get bigger after his latest performance.
Fonseca made his debut at the Argentina Open this year and was handed a tough draw against eighth seed Tomas Martin Etcheverry.
However, after hitting 34 winners in Buenos Aires, Fonseca beat Etcheverry in straight sets to secure his first win at the tournament.
This performance has caused fans to praise Fonseca once again, and social media was flooded with comments reacting to the 18-year-old’s performance.
One person said on X (formerly known as Twitter), “That’s some unreal tennis from João Fonseca! 34 winners and dominating on clay—he’s showing a lot of promise. Definitely one to keep an eye on for the future!”
Another social media user suggested that Fonseca has already made himself a contender for Roland Garros this year.
They said, “Joao Fonseca is winning Roland Garros me thinks.”
An additional person added, “THE PRINCE OF CLAY.”
One more said, “Etcheverry after his olympic performance [downwards trajectory emoji]. Fonseca is the new prodigy now. [fire emoji].”
Fonseca is currently the world number 99, but one fan suggested that he is set to significantly improve on that by the end of the year.
“Will be surprised if this guy isn’t at least top-20 (top-25 at worst) at the end of the season. And not at least top-3 one day.”
A few more people appeared in disbelief at what Fonseca is already doing as a teenager.
They said, “This kids ridiculous.”
Followed by, “FON!!! is Fun to watch.”
With Fonseca being predicted to achieve big things, many are looking forward to the future.
The ATP Next Gen Finals champion could break inside the top 70 of the rankings if he wins his first main tour title in Buenos Aires, and will then head to his home tournament in Rio de Janeiro.
Argentina Open | Fonseca’s potential ranking point total | Ranking it would currently give him |

Fonseca will play another Argentinian in the second round in Buenos Aires as he takes on lucky loser Federico Coria.
After the clay court season, Fonseca will head to California to play Indian Wells qualifying for the first time in his career.
