Coco Gauff’s latest performance was so impressive that she achieved something for the first time in four months.
The American is playing at the Wuhan Open, which is just her second tournament since splitting with coach Brad Gilbert and replacing with Matt Daly.
The 20-year-old’s good form continued when she dispatched Marta Kostyuk for the loss of just five games on Thursday.
She defeated the Ukrainian for the third time in her career and claimed his eighth successive victory following her run to the China Open title.
Gauff is now into the quarter-finals and she got there by producing one of her best performances of the 2024 season.
Coco Gauff claimed her 70th victory at WTA Tour 1000 events when she defeated Kostyuk at the Wuhan Open, and she is the youngest player to achieve this feat since the format began in 2009.
Gauff needed just 61 minutes to secure the win and during the match, Gauff did not produce a single double fault. This shows that Gauff is already making improvements with her serve under new coach Daly, which is something fans alluded to on social media platform X.
User @ChilliFactorFit posted: “Another outstanding performance. Still work in progress. But, No DF & only 9 unforced errors. Nearly a flawless match.
“The naysayers can’t say she didn’t beat a good top 20 player. Coco was relentless & took over the match from the middle of the first set to the end. #LetsGoCoco.”
@hereford1terra said: “The transformation in a couple of weeks has been amazing. Big credit to both Coco and her new team,” while @larn_iyur said: “Coco Gauff had 0 double faults against Kostyuk. This shows how much growth and improvement she has been displaying. Proud of her! Keep it going girl.”
@od_lotz said: “Gauff hit zero double faults in the match. Damn! That’s the most impressive thing about this match. You go Coco,” while @MPUMELELOPN said: “Coco Gauff gets her first straight sets win against Marta Kostyuk, 6-4 6-1. She did not hit any double faults in the match.”
Gauff’s win over Kostyuk at the Wuhan Open marked the first match in which she did not serve a double fault since the Berlin Open in June.
This was in the quarter-finals against Ons Jabeur, who retired from the contest after losing the first set.
The last completed match in which Gauff did not serve a double fault was against Liudmila Samsonova at the Citi Open in August 2023.
Gauff won that match 6-3, 6-3 and went on to win the title, before claiming the Cincinnati Open and US Open titles during a fantastic summer.
