THE FLATS – Georgia Tech gained bowl eligibility for the second straight year and dealt No. 4 Miami its first loss of the year Saturday as the Yellow Jackets toppled the Hurricanes, 28-23, at Bobby Dodd Stadium at Hyundai Field.
The Jackets (6-4, 4-3 ACC) ended a two-game skid, while the Hurricanes (9-1, 5-1 ACC) dropped out of first place in the ACC.
Tech quarterback Haynes King returned from a two-game absence, and along with backup Aaron Philo, helped a Yellow Jackets offense that piled up 271 yards on the ground. Tech’s defense came up with three critical fourth-down stops and a strip-sack of Hurricanes’ quarterback Cam Ward for the game’s only turnover with less than two minutes remaining.
Utilizing a ball-control offense and rotating QB duties between King and Philo in an effort to keep Miami’s offense off the field, Tech held the ball for nearly 35 of the game’s 60 minutes and limited the Hurricanes, who were averaging better than 47 points per game, to a season-low in points.
Jamal Haynes rushed for 81 of his 83 yards on Tech’s opening series, bursting 16 yards for the TD. King ran for a game-high 93 yards on 20 carries and scored the Jackets’ final touchdown of the game in the fourth period.
King and Philo, who combined to go 11-for-16 for 99 yards through the air, each threw a touchdown pass. King connected with Malik Rutherford for one score in the second period that put the Jackets ahead for good, and Philo hit Chase Lane for Tech’s third score in the third period, making the score 28-16.
Defensively, Tech stopped the Hurricanes on fourth down at its 23 in the second quarter, did so again at its 39 in the third period, and once again at its 28 in the fourth. The Jackets pinned Miami back at its 19 to start the Hurricanes’ final possession of the game, and on second-and-10, Romello Height got to Ward and stripped the ball, which was recovered by Jordan van den Berg with 1:48 remaining.
Tech returns to action Thursday, Nov. 21, hosting NC State for its final home game of the season. The game will kick off at 7:30 p.m. and be televised nationally on ESPN.
