FORT WORTH – TCU battled breezy conditions and a robust field but put itself within striking distance of a top-three finish at the inaugural Charles Schwab Women’s Collegiate on Monday.
Hosting its first stroke play event in two decades, TCU carded a 36-hole score of 11-over 579 at Ridglea Country Club North. The 23rd-ranked Horned Frogs finished the first round plus-five (289) and played even-par golf over their first nine holes in round two.
TCU sits in sixth in an 11-team field sporting a half-dozen squads that cracked the latest Scoreboard team rankings. The Horned Frogs trail No. 33 Kentucky and SMU by one stroke and are five shots back of second place. No. 15 Wake Forest is the outright leader at three-over (571).
Wind gusts reaching 20 miles per hour routinely pushed balls of their intended line and rolled putts off the North Course’s narrow greens. Team and individual scores fluctuated rapidly as a result. TCU spent a chunk of round one in ninth place, but the strong start to the afternoon briefly vaulted the Frogs into a tie for fourth with second place Texas A&M.
Five of TCU’s seven players closed inside the top-20 of the individual leaderboard.
Meagan Winans was the Frogs’ most consistent player. TCU’s lone senior, Winans was one-under over her final 32 holes and is tied for 11th (+1, 143). Winans collected the tournament’s first eagle on nine in round one and bolstered her score with seven birdies. She led the 60-player field in par-5 scoring (-5).
From nearby Plano, Texas, Winans has elevated on courses with a tougher handicap. She tied for ninth at three-over 219 at the Carmel Cup on the renowned Pebble Beach Golf Links to begin the 2024-25 campaign. Winans then finished T14 on the PGA Tour Keene Trace Golf Club in September in TCU’s team triumph at the Bettie Lou Evans Invitational. She has been even or under par in three of her last four rounds and five times total this fall.
Gracie McGovern rode a mastery of the middle sector of the course into a tie for 18th at three-over. She bagged six of her seven birdies on holes seven through 12. The freshman birdied three of her final 10 holes in each round. McGovern is competing as an individual.
Both Winans – four strokes back of the lead – and Sofia Barroso Sá shot one-under 70 in round one to sit tied for seventh. Barroso Sá peppered her first round scorecard with six birdies, including four on the back nine, and tallied a team-high eight on the day.
She is a part of a three-way TCU gridlock for 20th with Kirstin Angosta and Camille Min-Gaultier at five-over (147). Angosta played even-par golf in round two. Min-Gaultier matched her teammate with a similar finish, birdieing three of her final 10 holes.
Sofie Dimitrova rounded out TCU’s five-player lineup with a six-over 148 to sit tied for 25th. She finished plus-three in both rounds.
TCU is paired with the Wildcats and Mustangs for Tuesday’s final 18 holes. The Horned Frogs will tee off in nine-minute intervals on hole one, beginning at 8:30 a.m.
