Taylor Fritz once again made his stance clear on the US Open mixed doubles format change.
The New York-based Grand Slam was the first major to introduce on -court coaching and now they are set to make another significant change in 2025.
The mixed doubles competition has always been a part of the tournament along with the men’s and women’s doubles, as well as the singles events.
But this year the US Open will hold the mixed doubles competition at a different time, which has received a polarising response.
Should fans who attend the 2025 US Open wish to watch mixed doubles, they will have to do so during what is known as ‘Fan Week.’
The mixed doubles competition is usually held alongside the men and women’s singles and doubles events when the main draw commences, but now the mixed doubles competition will commence the week prior.
Furthermore, the size of the field will decrease from 32 to 16 teams, and during the first three rounds, teams will need to win up to four games to win a set, while the final will be played with regular sets.
Taylor Fritz, who previously suggested he would play in the new event, understands why specialised doubles may not get the chance to compete.
“I think [doubles players] have a right to be upset, be angry,” he told Sports Illustrated. “I think that’s the first thing I thought when I saw the mixed doubles thing. It’s like, O.K., now they’re finally going to put a lot of prize money into it.
“But doubles players aren’t going to get the opportunity to play. So, I get their side of it. But I think you also have to look at the side of the tournaments, a business side of things. We’ll get the proof, I guess, at the U.S. Open.
“If the turnout for the mixed doubles event with the top singles players in it is much, much better and maybe in the tournament it feels like they’re profiting off of it more than [before], I don’t think you can argue with it from a business side of things.
“But obviously, a traditional side of things, like I get, what the doubles players [are saying]. I get why they’re upset.”
The likes of Fritz and Holger Rune want to play the US Open mixed doubles tournament.
Mirra Andreeva said she would love to play with Andy Murray if possible, and Andy Roddick hopes that Roger Federer would play.
The likes of Rennae Stubbs has described the new format like an exhibition, especially with it taking place before the US Open officially commences.
But Fritz seems content with the timing of the event and plans to compete and go for the title.
“It is a convenient time, and I enjoy playing, so I am going to be planning on playing it,” the US Open runner-up said.
