Later this month, Tate McRae will release her highly-anticipated third album So Close to What. The set is scheduled to drop on February 21, and the singer has shared what may be a final single before the project arrives in full–and now her fans have made it an instant win.
“Sports Car” debuts inside the top 10 on the singles chart in the United Kingdom this week. The tune opens at No. 8, earning McRae another smash to add to her collection. The Canadian pop musician has now seen five of her tracks reach the highest tier on the list of the most-consumed songs throughout the U.K.
The catchy “Sports Car” is tied with two other tracks, “2 Hands” and “10:35” with Tiësto, as the lowest-ranking of her top 10 smashes. Two other tunes are matched with one another as McRae’s highest-rising on the U.K.’s main songs tally. She first reached No. 3 in 2020 with “You Broke Me First,” which many remember as her breakout single. In 2023, “Greedy” made her an international superstar when it also climbed to third place on the U.K.-based list.
Interestingly, and somewhat oddly, as “Sports Car” launches inside the top 10 on the consumption-centric songs ranking, it debuts on three other lists, but it doesn’t manage to crack the top 10 on any of them. It’s not common for any top 10 hit on the main ranking to fail to enter that same region on either a streaming or sales roster, but it seems that in its first frame, “Sports Car” performed well enough across all metrics to become a general top 10.
“Sports Car” performed best on platforms like Spotify and Apple Music in the U.K. as it launches at No. 12 on the Official Streaming chart. That is the single’s highest position on any of the rankings aside from the main consumption tally.
McRae’s newest tune is also a top 40 bestseller on more than one ranking. “Sports Car” starts its engine and revs to No. 26 on the Official Singles Downloads chart. It parks two positions below that rung on the Official Singles Sales tally.
As “Sports Car” gets off to a fantastic start, two other singles taken from So Close to What continue to appear on the U.K.’s singles chart. Lead track “It’s Ok I’m Ok” returns to the top 40, pushing from No. 51 to No. 37. At the same time, “2 Hands” also improves, lifting from No. 68 to No. 49.
