ANNAPOLIS, Md. // Navy’s Jack Tarzy (Jr / Medford, N.J.) birdied five of the final-seven holes to make the leap from 21st to second in the final standings of the inaugural The Goat played Saturday and Sunday at the par-71 Naval Academy Golf Club. As a team, Navy shot a 27-over par 879 (297-290-292) to finish fifth in the 15-team tournament.
Sorting Out the Finish
Pacific raced out to an early lead in the tournament and never looked back, as the Tigers claimed the team title with a 1-under par 851. Pacific opened the tournament with a 10-under par 274, one of just two subpar rounds recorded all weekend (Loyola was 1-under in the final round). Though the Tigers cooled off over the final two rounds (285, 292), their opening-round lead was insurmountable. Individual medalist Gustavo Rangel helped push Loyola to the runner-up position with an 8-over par 860 (291-286-283), while William & Mary (293-289-290=872), Columbia (287-287-300=874) and Navy (297-290-292=879) rounded out the top five.
Navy Notes
Tarzy entered the final round in 21st, and early on it did not look particularly promising for the third-year player. He bogeyed the second hole and double bogeyed the third. However, he settled down over the next several holes before making a run at the lead. He birdied seven of the final 11 holes, including three of the final four to shoot a 4-under par 67 for the round. He held the lead for better than an hour before Rangel secured sole possession of the lead and eventual win with three holes remaining.
Chip Deegan (Jr / Newport Beach, Calif.) placed 25th with a 7-over par 220 (74-72-74), followed by Kaden Ausen (Fr / Puyallup, Wash.) in 28th with an 8-over par 221 (77-71-73) and Ed Scott (Fr / Lemont, Ill.) (74-79-78) and Benjamin Valdez (Sr / Stevenson Ranch, Calif.) (78-75-78) tied for 61st with an 18-over par 231.
In addition to its five-man team, Navy also had six golfers who competed as individuals. Noah Nuez (Sr / Laveen, Ariz.) led the way with a 17th-place performance, turning in a 4-over par 217 (74-70-73). Owen Huntington (Sr / Camas, Wash.) finished 36th with a 10-over par 223 (77-72-74), Derek Weaver (Jr / Hackettstown, N.J.) (71-77-77) and Luke Lombardo (So / Severna Park, Md.) (77-73-75) placed 41st with a 12-over par 225, Danny Auffant (So / Bellevue, Wash.) was 48th with a 14-over par 227 (76-74-77) and James Devore (Fr / Porter, Texas) was 80th with a 24-over par 237 (75-82-80).
