MONTGOMERY, Texas- Tarleton State Men’s Golf is gearing up for its first spring 2025 competition with the Bentwater Intercollegiate February 10-11 at the Miller Golf Course.
Tarleton State will compete in the Bentwater Intercollegiate for the second straight season. Last year’s competition was highlighted by Max Bengsston, who placed second individually.
The tournament will be co-hosted by Rice and Sam Houston State and include 14 teams this year. Sam Houston won the 2024 Bentwater Intercollegiate, Sam Houston’s Josh German winning the individual title at 7-under-par.
The Texans completed the fall season at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic last October. Seniors Alvaro Huidobro and Carson Gallaher each finished in the top 20 in the event.
Huidobro shot 3-under-par through his first 36 holes before shooting an even-par to close out his last fall tournament. Huidobro also tallied three birdies in the Oregon State Invitational’s third round.
Gallaher, who competed in Monterrey Collegiate Classic as an individual, shot 3-under par in the first round and 2-under par in his next 18 holes.
Sophomore Juan Ballester collected his best finish as a Texan in Mexico, finishing tied for 35th at the Monterrey Collegiate Classic. During his freshman campaign, Ballester had two top 10 finishes, registering a season-low 18-hole score of 69 on four different occasions.
Freshman Drew Ironside compiled a 54-hole score of 224 in his first event as a Texan in Monterrey. Ironside was a medalist at the Tall City Boys Invitational and won the NTPGA Junior Tour event held at Midland CC, shooting a 68.
Freshman Kellen Young’s will compete in his fifth collegiate event as a Texan. At the fall Mark Simpson Invitational, Young shot a 68 4-under-par in the first round, matching the lowest score for a round by a Tarleton State freshman in the Division I Era.
Tarleton State is going to Montgomery after finishing tied for seventh overall at the event last season. The Texans had the most eagles of the 13 teams, including one from Huidobro.
Tarleton State will be one of 14 teams competing, including fellow WAC teams Abilene Christian and UT Arlington. This will be Tarleton State’s first opportunity to go up against both its in-state conference rivals before the WAC Championships.
