Jaquan Carlos finds Lucas Taylor for a triple to end an extended scoring drought.

On the next trip down Carlos rises up for the jumper himself. Ruled a long two as his foot was on the three-point line.

Chris Bell gets Syracuse on the board first with a layup on the fast break after a few early turnovers.

Elijah Moore knocks down the fifteen-foot pull-up for his first two of the contest.

Eddie Lampkin corals the offensive rebound and puts it back up.

Pregame

Syracuse (5-5) returns to Brooklyn for the Gotham Classic where they take on Maryland (9-2).

The Orange and the Terrapins are facing each other for the tenth time. Maryland has the advantage in the series, 5-4. But SU has won the last four meetings. The last time that they lost was back in 1980. The most recent game between the two was in 2017 where Syracuse defeated Maryland 72-70.

SU dropped its last game against Georgetown in a 75-71 loss a week ago. The loss was the first on the JMA Wireless Dome floor this season. Eddie Lampkin led the way with 18 points for the Orange, while Jaquan Carlos had a season-high 15 points.

On the other hand is Maryland, who is coming off a dominant 111-57 win at home against Saint Francis. Five players scored in double digits last game and from start to finish they outmatched SFU with their ability to score and get stops on the other end.

Freshman Derik Queen leads the way for the Terps in terms of scoring with 17.3 points per game. Ja’Kobi Gillespie isn’t too far behind with 13.8 a night.

One Thing To Keep An Eye On: A Matchup Between Two Highly Touted Freshman

By the end of last year’s high school basketball recruiting cycle, Syracuse forward Donnie Freeman was ranked the sixth best player in the country, according to ESPN’s Top 100. Maryland’s Queen was just two spots behind him at number eight. The two played against each other recently in the McDonald’s All-American game back in April, but it was Queen who stole the show with a 23-point performance that helped him win Co-MVP honors.

Freeman finished with six points in the game. This season, he’s averaging 13 points and eight boards a night for the Orange. Freeman has been one of the more consistent players on the squad this year, and his versatility offensively will make him a valuable commodity at the next level.

Expect these two freshmen to matchup at some point in the game. Beyond just the outcome of the game, there’s certainly bragging rights to whichever forward tops the other coming out of the match.
