Syracuse (5-4) hosts Georgetown (7-2) for its centennial rivalry game on Dec. 14.
These two foes have met as conference and nonconference rivals, with games going back to 1930. The two programs have had a tense relationship on the court beginning in 1980, including showdowns between Syracuse and Georgetown nearly 30 times throughout the 1980s.
These two teams have battled since they were conference rivals in the Big East, and since then, it’s been a regularly scheduled game for Syracuse. Chris Bell is the only player who’s previously experienced the Orange vs. Hoyas rivalry for this Syracuse roster.
The Orange beat Albany on Tuesday, 102-85, after losing four of their last five games. Head coach Adrian Autry switched up his starting lineup against the Great Danes, putting in Elijah Moore in for Donnie Freeman. Freeman was a game-time decision against Albany, and scored a team-high 24 points. Jaquan Carlos recorded his first double-double of the season in Tuesday’s matchup, recording 12 assists — his highest assist count since he broke the CAA single-game record with Hofstra.
Georgetown’s five-game win streak was snapped on Dec. 6, after the Hoyas lost to West Virginia in Morgantown, W.V., 73-60. Jayden Epps, Thomas Sorber and Malik Mack combined for 40 points in the loss. Sorber is Georgetown’s leading scorer through the first month of the season, averaging 15.4 points per game.
Georgetown only scored eight bench points against the Mountaineers — the second time in as many games the Hoyas didn’t record more than 10 points off the bench.
One thing both teams have in common: struggles to shoot from distance. Both Syracuse and Georgetown are shooting under 30% from beyond the arc, while their opponents have scored at least 69 triples this year.
Freeman’s perfect 4-for-4 against Albany helped the Orange’s percentage, while Georgetown’s Mack is the best percentage for the Hoyas, shooting just under 40%. Still, neither team has played a game with consistency from long range. Having even one player shoot well can make an impact on this rivalry game.
