Syracuse basketball (5-6, 0-1 ACC) returns from a week-long holiday hiatus to host Bucknell (4-8). It’s Syracuse’s final nonconference game of the season.
The Orange are trying to end its nonconference season on a high note, after dropping their game against Maryland, 87-60, on neutral court a week ago. The team’s lost four of its last five games, the loss against the Terrapins and falling to Georgetown on Dec. 14.
Bucknell has also struggled throughout its nonconference slate, losing its last six games. The Bison have been without small forward Ian Motta for five games, after he was injured during Bucknell’s game against Maryland — when the Bison fell 91-67.
The Bison have remained towards the top of the Patriot League over the last few seasons, falling to Colgate in the conference semifinals last season. This is Syracuse’s second Patriot League opponent it faces this year, when the Orange beat the Raiders on home court, 74-72, back on Nov. 12.
Bucknell has three starters from last season’s semifinals squad back on the roster. Four of its five starters were on the team last year, the lone guard dawning a Colgate jersey being Davidson transfer Achile Spadone.
But for this year’s matchup, it’s likely a battle of the bigs. Syracuse’ Eddie Lampkin has said he prefers playing against a true center. He’ll get that wish against Bucknell.
The Bison will bring in Noah Williamson, listed at 7-feet and 250 pounds, to fair against the Orange’s transfer from Colorado. These two have nearly identical statures, since Lampkin’s listed as a 6-foot-11, 265 pound center. Williamson is currently Bucknell’s second-leading scorer, averaging 13.6 points per game. Both Williamson and Lampkin are averaging over six rebounds per game.
However, Syracuse is the worst in the ACC in scoring defense. The Orange allow an average 80.1 points per game, with their opponents making well over half their 2-point shots.
In order for Syracuse to have another win against a Patriot League opponent, Lampkin has to score and defend well. The Orange’s freshman Donnie Freeman has done his part, averaging 7.8 rebounds per game, but in the young forward can’t do it alone — especially against a true center like Williamson.
