Syracuse, N.Y. — The Syracuse basketball team takes on the Southern Methodist Mustangs at 9 p.m., Tuesday at Moody Coliseum in Dallas.

Despite leading by double-digits for stretches and having the lead for more than 35 out of 40 in-game minutes, Syracuse was unable to hold on against SMU.
With the game tied, Mustang Keon Ambrose-Hylton tipped in a missed shot attempt with seconds on the shot clock to give his team the lead. That would be the decisive blow as SMU mounted the comeback in a 77-75 win against Syracuse on Tuesday evening in the Moody Coliseum in Dallas.
Six players scored in ten points or more for SMU. The team was led by Kario Oquendo who scored 16 points.
The Orange also had six players in double-digits. Lucas Taylor had the team-high of 13.
This loss represents a troubling trend for Syracuse. The last three losses, this game and the two prior against Pittsburgh and Virginia Tech saw the Orange squander halftime leads.
Syracuse looked as if they had control of this one as well at the half. They led by eight and was shooting over 50% from behind the arc.
But as the game waned, SU slowly began to revert to bad habits. Instead of swinging the ball and finding open shooters and cutting, the Orange went to isolation basketball late.
Those plays resulted in little ball movement from the four other players who did not have the ball, making their offense predictable and SMU capitalized with stops.
On the other end, they began to attack Lampkin in the paint and pick-and-roll. They followed that game plan to the end when Ambrose-Hylton made the game-winning layup.

Carlos swerves around the defense before finding his spot on the baseline and drills the jumper.
Davis corrals the offensive board and goes right back up for the score.

Naheem McLeod carves out position, corrals the offensive board, and goes right back up for the score plus the foul. He knocked down the free-throw to convert the three-point play.

Taylor catches his defender with the crossover and drills the jumper .
Carlos cuts, gets into the paint, and drops off a pass to Davis who finishes at the rim.
Starling races down the court in transition and throws a no-look, wrap around the defender pass to Lampkin for an easy layup.
After shooting over 50% from behind the arc in the first half, the Orange are in the drivers seat against one of the ACC’s best.
Jaquan Carlos’ banked in triple at the buzzer summed up the type of night it has been for the Orange. If it went up, it more than likely was going in.
Lucas Taylor led the way for Syracuse with 11 points, all coming within the first few minutes of the contest before he was subbed out.
For SMU, Kario Oquendo also leads his team with 11 points. He knocked down three triples in the first half and consistently found a way to get open on the perimeter.
Syracuse is one half away from a major upset that could potentially spoil SMU’s NCAA tournament hopes.
The Orange will have to continue finding their shooters for three’s and limit Oquendo from getting open to close out their final road trip of the season with a win.

With the shot clock expiring, Carlos banks in a triple to head into the half.

On the next play, Starling spots up in the corner and knocks down the open triple.
Syracuse (12-17, 6-12 ACC) faces its final opponent on the road this season in SMU (21-8, 12-6 ACC).
This is the first ever matchup between the Orange and the Mustangs. Prior to this season, SMU spent the last 11 years in the AAC before relocating to the ACC. In their first season in the conference, they’ve locked down a top five spot headed into the ACC tournament in a week.
Syracuse’s last outing was a 95-101 overtime loss on the road against Virginia Tech on Saturday. SU had led throughout the majority of the contest, but they squandered their lead late and was unable to retain their momentum in the extra period.
Jyare Davis led the way for the Orange with 21 points. Eddie Lampkin put up a 16-point, 12-rebound double-double in the loss as well.
SMU is led by Boopie Miller who averages 13.4 points a night. He’s one of five players on the roster averaging double figures in scoring. That’s part of the reason why the Mustangs rank third in scoring in the conference at nearly 82 points a game.
The Mustangs last time out was a 73-68 loss on the road against Stanford over the weekend. Chuck Harris led the team in scoring with 17 points.
One Thing To Keep An Eye On: ACC Tournament Seeding Is On The Line
While the Orange have already clinched a spot in the ACC tournament, their seeding isn’t totally established yet. Depending on how the final two games of the season go, it can impact who Syracuse faces come next week in the ACC tournament.
