Playing cards imports into Qatar skyrocketed to 68 tons in 2024, rising by 34% on 2023 figures. Overall, imports enjoyed significant growth. The pace of growth appeared the most rapid in 2015 when imports increased by 227% against the previous year. Over the period under review, imports reached the maximum in 2024 and are likely to continue growth in the near future.
In value terms, playing cards imports skyrocketed to $883K (IndexBox estimates) in 2024. In general, imports saw a significant increase. The most prominent rate of growth was recorded in 2021 with an increase of 291%. Imports peaked at $1M in 2022; however, from 2023 to 2024, imports remained at a lower figure.
In 2022, China (52 tons) constituted the largest playing cards supplier to Qatar, with a 83% share of total imports. Moreover, playing cards imports from China exceeded the figures recorded by the second-largest supplier, the United States (7.8 tons), sevenfold. The third position in this ranking was taken by Italy (1.4 tons), with a 2.2% share.
From 2014 to 2022, the average annual growth rate of volume from China amounted to +34.0%. The remaining supplying countries recorded the following average annual rates of imports growth: the United States (+110.5% per year) and Italy (+2.5% per year).
In value terms, the largest playing cards suppliers to Qatar were China ($470K), the United States ($342K) and Italy ($139K), with a combined 91% share of total imports.
Among the main suppliers, the United States, with a CAGR of +60.9%, recorded the highest growth rate of the value of imports, over the period under review, while purchases for the other leaders experienced more modest paces of growth.
In 2024, the playing cards price amounted to $16,639 per ton (CIF, Qatar), remaining constant against the previous year. In general, the import price recorded buoyant growth. The pace of growth was the most pronounced in 2016 an increase of 140%. The import price peaked in 2022 and is expected to retain growth in the near future.
Prices varied noticeably by country of origin: amid the top importers, the country with the highest price was Italy ($101,241 per ton), while the price for China ($8,996 per ton) was amongst the lowest.
From 2014 to 2022, the most notable rate of growth in terms of prices was attained by Italy (+53.6%), while the prices for the other major suppliers experienced a decline.
