Cogburn has been as impressive as any turf sprinter this year, winning consecutive graded stakes in scintillating fashion, the types of wins that attract money independent of the variables surrounding their next race.
So it goes Saturday at Kentucky Downs, where the Jaipur Stakes (G1) winner takes on 11 others in the Grade 2 Turf Sprint Stakes. He is the 6-5 morning-line favorite and even could go to odds-on against some accomplished turf sprinters, including last year’s Breeders’ Cup Turf Sprint winner Nobals.
Indeed, it is a tale of two turf sprinters with Cogburn riding that two-race win streak with a combined margin of victory of 5 3/4 lengths while Nobals lost his seasonal bow six weeks ago at Saratoga at 8-5. One thing both these speedballs have in common is they’re 0-for-1 at Kentucky Downs, and neither has any wins going six furlongs on turf.
That all adds up to a chance to beat Cogburn. That is what Mike Shutty wrote in the Super Screener, which includes six races at Kentucky Downs and Del Mar. There is an in-depth look at the all-graded-stakes Pick 3 at Kentucky Downs that begins with the Franklin-Simpson Stakes, ends with the Turf Sprint and has the Kentucky Cup in between.

Shutty is swinging for the fences at Kentucky Downs.
“Cogburn is the horse to beat on paper, but he doesn’t have to win this race as conditions look for a strong, condition-building outcome ahead of the Breeders’ Cup,” Shutty said. “He is not invincible over this turf course, especially given he seems to have done his best running over tighter configurations.
“Nobals earns top billing second off the layoff. He really needed that last race, and form-cycle analysis predicts that he’ll move forward five to six points in this start. His abundant speed puts him in the race early, and his energy distribution will have him running at the end as well.”
