FOX Sports NFL analyst Jimmy Johnson is retiring from broadcasting, he announced Monday.
Johnson, 81, announced his retirement during an appearance on “The Herd with Colin Cowherd.”
“I’ve made an extremely difficult decision. I’ve been thinking about it for the last four or five years, and I’ve decided to retire from FOX,” Johnson said. “I’m going to miss it, I’m going to miss all the guys. I’ll see them occasionally. It has been a great run starting back 31 years ago.”
Johnson, a Pro Football Hall of Fame coach, first joined FOX Sports for its debut in 1994. He joined the network after five seasons as head coach of the Dallas Cowboys, where he won consecutive Super Bowls in 1992 and 1993.
After two seasons at FOX, Johnson returned to the NFL to coach the Miami Dolphins for four seasons from 1996-99. He returned to FOX in 2002 and has since been a staple of the network’s FOX NFL Sunday pregame show. He has worked alongside host Curt Menefee and analysts Terry Bradshaw, Howie Long and Michael Strahan since 2008.
“Jimmy Johnson was there when FOX NFL SUNDAY came on-air for the first time 31 years ago, and since then has been a cherished member of our FOX Sports family, which makes today’s retirement news bittersweet,” FOX Sports CEO Eric Shanks said in a statement.
“Coach will be sincerely missed and we wish him the best as he sets sail into retirement, like only Jimmy Johnson can,” he added.
Prior to coaching in the NFL, Johnson coached at the collegiate level for Oklahoma State from 1979-83 and the University of Miami from 1984-88. Johnson led UM to a 52-9 record and won the 1987 national championship before being hired as the Cowboys’ head coach ahead of the 1989 NFL season.
