The Kansas City Chiefs won their ninth straight AFC West title Sunday, beating the Los Angeles Chargers 19-16 to clinch the division.
Kicker Matthew Wright, playing in his second game of the season for the Chiefs, banked in a field goal off the left upright as time expired to give Kansas City the win. Three plays before the decisive kick, Patrick Mahomes found Travis Kelce on a third-and-7 for a first down, allowing the Chiefs to run down the clock for the final play.
Mahomes completed 24 of 47 passes for 210 yards and one touchdown.
Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert, playing without his leading receiver and his leading rusher, threw for 213 yards and a score. Herbert led Los Angeles to 17 points in the second half but couldn’t get the offense into the end zone on the team’s final drive, setting the stage for Kansas City’s game-winning field goal.
The Chiefs improved to 12-1. They will next play the Cleveland Browns in Week 15.
The Chargers fell to 8-5. Los Angeles has only one win against a team with a winning record this season. Their next game is at home against the 7-6 Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
