While the current weather forecast for the 2024 Presidents Cup from Sept. 26-29 at The Royal Montreal Golf Club in Montreal, Quebec, Canada, is a mixed bag of rain, clouds and sun, the biennial match play event provides a big platform for brands to shine regardless of whatever Mother Nature brings.
That’s the hope for Summit Golf Brands’ B.Draddy and Zero Restriction, which were named Official Apparel Providers of the 2024 Presidents Cup. Not only are both brands tasked with outfitting the U.S. and International teams and their caddies, but they’re responsible for providing uniforms for all event staff as well.
“With us being a smaller golf company, rarely do we get to put our clothing on 24 of the best golfers in the world,” said Billy Draddy, Summit Golf Brands creative director. “So that’s a great opportunity in terms of the general public being able to see our product, but also a great opportunity to have the best in the world wearing it.”
Launched in 1991 by making waterproof rainwear for golfers, Zero Restriction has been called upon to provide outerwear for the U.S. team in the past, including the 2015 Presidents Cup in South Korea and the 2022 edition in North Carolina.
Founded in 2013, B.Draddy joins the fold this year as both brands are responsible for outfitting everyone involved with the tournament, which pits a U.S. team headlined by Scottie Scheffler, Xander Schauffele and Collin Morikawa against an International team of global golf stars from around the world excluding Europe including Hideki Matsuyama, Jason Day and Tom Kim.
Knowing the varied weather of Quebec in late September, B.Draddy and Zero Restriction developed multiple products for both teams, ranging from layering pieces including hoodies, quarter zips and vests to moisture-wicking polos.
With pressure on the U.S. team to erase any and all bad memories from a disappointing 2023 Ryder Cup and on the International squad to hoist the Presidents Cup for the first time since its lone win in 1998, the last thing the captains and players want to worry about is their wardrobe.
“The forecast looks good but I know in the mornings and evenings it can get pretty darn chilly,” U.S. captain Jim Furyk said. “I feel good, and so does (International captain) Mike (Weir) on their side that these guys will have some great layering pieces to keep warm and play their best.”
Furyk is more than familiar with Summit Golf Brands, joining as an ambassador in February. Not only that, but Presidents Cup participants Patrick Cantlay, Brian Harman and Christian Bezuidenhout are also on the SGB roster, which also includes Taylor Moore, Zac Blair, Victor Perez, Leona Maguire, Cheyenne Knight.
In working with Furyk and Weir, the priority for Summit Golf Brands was to ensure all players were properly equipped, comfortable and warm, while adding a bit of U.S. and International flair to both sides’ wardrobes, whether that’s white stars on the U.S. team’s cool star polo they’ll wear Sunday or subtle homages to Weir’s native Canada on the appropriately named Weir polo.
“Having two different teams and two different captains, you have to jump into the mindset of each of them and that’s what makes it a lot different (from past years),” Draddy said. “Not that Jim Furyk and Mike Weir style-wise are that much different, but they are different enough that you have to think about it.
“Jim was attracted to the more performance side of B.Draddy with the Draddy Sport line, and Mike was more attracted to the natural fibers in B.Draddy, so that helped in differentiating between the two.”
With a wholesale distribution network that extends across 25 countries and encompasses more than 3,500 premier clubs and resorts worldwide, Summit Golf Brands executives hope outfitting players during these marquee moments in golf help further the brands’ reach and influence as the game continues to grow. Zero Restriction was also the Official Outerwear Supplier of the U.S. team at the recent 2024 Solheim Cup.
An estimated 45 million Americans age 6+ played both on- and off-course golf in 2023, according to the National Golf Foundation.
“Our quality and the fact that we’re golfers designing products for other golfers gives us a unique perspective because pretty much everyone in the company wears and uses our product to play golf, so there’s always instant feedback,” Draddy said. “… What we’ve found is that as long as there’s a price-to-value relationship, how expensive the product is doesn’t really come into the purchase decision.”
The memories of a disappointing 2023 Ryder Cup in Rome still linger over the U.S. team. While the Presidents Cup could serve as a temporary bandage in the lead up to the hopeful redemption tour at the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage, the pressures on Furyk and Team USA are palpable.
With eight members of the U.S. squad ranked in the top-15 of the world and a history of dominance in the competition, the 2024 Presidents Cup is theirs to lose according to many.
The 54-year-old Furyk who has been a player or captain on 16 U.S. teams throughout his storied career knows the key to success is blocking out all of the noise.
“As an American squad, we’re super talented, we’re super deep,” he said. “There’s guys who didn’t make this team that are extremely talented and I think that causes a lot of controversy. The media always likes to play up that we’re the favorites and look at our past record in the Presidents Cup, but for us, it’s not worrying about past results, it’s worrying about the process and getting ourselves prepared.
“Everyone is talking about the other team chasing us, but if you talk to any coach or anyone in the athletic world, when you’re No. 1, everyone is giving you their best shot, but you’re not going to sit there and take it. Our guys are going to come out, forget about everything they read and hear, prepare and think about the process, get out on the course and get after it.”
