Rainy British weather putting a dampener (literally) on your summer plans? Well, we might be erring on the side of optimism, but warmer weather is on the horizon – so why not make the most of the promised sunshine and head to the Qatar Goodwood Festival?
Affectionately dubbed ‘Glorious Goodwood’, this five-day festival is held at the Goodwood Estate in West Sussex. With roots tracing back to 1801 – when the third Duke of Richmond arranged a private race meeting for local army officers – the Qatar Goodwood Festival, held this year from 30 July to 3 August 2024, promises to be a celebration of exceptional flat racing, fine dining and fashion.
For traditional thrill-seekers, the races provide plenty of opportunity to get the adrenaline rushing as you cheer your favourite horse across the finish line. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the endless entertainment on offer at the Qatar Goodwood Festival.
Glorious Goodwood is also a celebration of style – where fabulous summer trends are spotted and set. Test your sartorial styling chops at the best dressed competition on 2 August 2024. Here, guests in the Richmond and Gordon enclosures will have the chance to wow with their showstopping outfits, and win some exceptional prizes. With no strict dress code in place beyond ‘quintessential British elegance’, be sure to have fun with bright colours, bold prints, and statement accessories – no top hat, fascinator or fine jewellery is too extravagant for this day at the races.
Alongside high-octane flat races and a dose of glamour, attendees will enjoy a week of unrivalled hospitality at the event. Discover the full agenda:
Kicking things off in style, the first day will open with the historic Al Shaqab Goodwood Cup, one of the country’s leading staying races, with a side helping of unforgettable couture. Now in its fourth year, the Goodwood Talent in Fashion Award will be presented to London-based designer Bora Aksu, known for his feminine, romantic collections featuring intricate detailing. As the winner, Aksu has designed three gowns that will be unveiled during the opening ceremony. After a day of fashion and flat racing, enjoy the popular annual cricket match played in honour of racing journalist Alan Lee in front of Goodwood House.
Day two is all about the legendary Qatar Sussex Stakes race for milers. An undeniable highlight of the British racing season, it’s often called the ‘Duel On The Downs’ thanks to its reputation for bringing together outstanding horses and riding talents.
Don your finest sundresses and hats and catch up with friends while cheering on the inspirational female riders racing in the unique Markel Magnolia Cup in a bid to raise more than £200,000 for charity. Also, make sure to catch the prestigious Group 1 Qatar Nassau Stakes, where fillies take centre stage.
While the Group 2 King George Qatar Stakes race sees the world’s top sprinters battle it out, the stakes are even higher off the course thanks to the best dressed competition for men and women. Dig out your most extravagant dresses and suits to stand a chance of being selected. Think floaty floral dresses and elegant heels for women and linen suits and Panama hats for men.
Raise a toast to the last day as 30 thoroughbreds race to victory in the Coral Stewards’ Cup, one of the oldest handicap races in the British flat racing calendar. Off track, take advantage of Goodwood’s exceptional hospitality and amenities as you enjoy the last day of socialising with the cream of the crop.
In addition to the roster of events, Qatar Goodwood Festival also delivers luxurious dining experiences. Whether you opt for a formal four-course meal at the distinguished Charlton Hunt dining room or choose a three course Chef’s table lunch and afternoon tea at the Long View, overlooking the home straight, you’ll find delicious food and drink accompanied by fantastic views of the race track or parade ring.
From high fashion and haute cuisine to the pinnacle of horse racing, there’s something for everyone at Qatar Goodwood Festival. Whether you attend for a day or the whole week, every day is set to be truly glorious indeed.
