With cricket returning to the Olympics, one of Australia’s top cricketers Steve Smith on Saturday expressed the desire to continue playing and represent his country at the LA 2028 Games.

The 35-year-old Smith hit an unbeaten 64-ball 121 to guide Sydney Sixers to a 14-run over Perth Scorchers in the Big Bash League (BBL) on Saturday showcasing that he isn’t done with cricket just yet.

“I would like to play at the Olympics, I reckon that would be cool. We’ll see how far I go in terms of long-form cricket,” Smith told Fox Sports after the match. “But I am going to play short-form cricket for a while I think when I do finish, you never know.”

Cricket, to be played at the LA 2028 Summer Games in a T20 format, will return to the Olympics after more than a century. The sport was a part of the Paris 1900 Olympics but was played in the Test format.

Smith, who will be 39 when the LA 2028 Olympics kick off, remains a formidable force in T20 cricket. He has scored 5,754 runs in 256 matches, including four centuries and 27 fifties in the shortest format.

In T20 Internationals, Smith has featured in 67 matches for Australia, scoring 1094 runs at an average of 24.86. He was also a part of the Australian cricket team that won the T20 World Cup in 2021.

Smith’s T20 numbers in recent times also paint an impressive picture. Since 2023, he has scored 950 from 21 outings at an average of 59.37. His knock on Saturday was his third century in his last seven matches as an opener in the BBL.

The former Australian captain also was a key part of Washington Freedom’s title-winning campaign in Major League Cricket 2024, where he scored 336 runs in nine matches at an average of 56 and a strike rate of 148.67.
