Winning a fifth NBA championship with the Golden State Warriors is the overriding motivation for Stephen Curry at this point in his career.
“Honestly, it’s the only thing I’m really playing for at this point,” he said on Dubs Talk (via Monte Poole of NBC Sports Bay Area). “It’s the only thing that matters in the sense of accomplishment.”
Curry added that “I definitely want to get greedy” in terms of adding more achievements to an already Hall of Fame-worthy résumé.
The 36-year-old’s legacy is pretty much cemented at this point. He has a load of individual accolades (two MVPs and 10 All-Star and All-NBA nods), and he was the player most synonymous with Golden State’s dynastic run of four titles across eight years.
More than that, Curry is the greatest shooter in NBA history, one who has reshaped how the game is played. More and more players have expanded their range well beyond the three-point line, and it will take years to fully appreciate how much Curry has influenced younger generations on the court.
Having said all of that, there may not be much more the Warriors star can do to elevate himself higher up on the pecking order of NBA legends. He’s never going to overtake Michael Jordan or LeBron James for the title of greatest ever, and plenty of fans will remain steadfast that Magic Johnson is the best to play point guard.
Getting to five championships would at least place Curry into a more select group. Johnson, Kobe Bryant, Tim Duncan and George Mikan are among the notable names to get there. He’d draw level with his head coach, Steve Kerr, as well.
While there’s still a lot of the season to go, the Warriors’ 10-3 start has raised hopes that their window for contention hasn’t yet closed and that they could have one more Finals run in them with the tandem of Curry and Draymond Green.
