Stellantis to reopen Illinois plant, reinstate 1,500 jobs to Rockford area
Automaker Stellantis plans to produce a new midsize pickup truck in Belvidere and return about 1,500 union jobs to the long-idled Illinois plant, according to an email.
The email obtained by the Rockford Register Star Wednesday states the company’s chairman, John Elkann, met with President Donald Trump to discuss the company’s plans to rebuild.
Specific actions detailed in the email include:
- Production of a new mid-size pickup truck in Belvidere, returning approximately 1,500 UAW-represented employees to work in that location.
- Production of the next generation Dodge Durango at our Detroit Assembly Complex.
- Investment in Toledo, including additional technologies and strong product actions for Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator and more components critical to production.
- Investment in our Kokomo facilities to produce the GMET4 EVO engine.
“These actions are part of our commitment to invest in our U.S. operations to grow our auto production and manufacturing here,” the email states. “We have shared with the UAW all these actions and our desire to work together to strengthen our great company.”
